I recently decided to dump the mostly plastic factory hubs for more robust aftermarket hubs. The two options for my 2017 are either Warn or the Milemarker 549. I hadn't heard much about this model Milemarker hub and had used Warns in the past. I bought both from NAPA so I could compare the build quality and planned to return the lesser product. The Milemarkers were about $100 less expensive. After examining them both, the Milemarker trounced the Warn. The outer face and dial are stainless steel vs pot metal on the Warn. The Milemarkers don't use a cage for the two cogs. Instead they use a set of beefy beveled engagement teeth. If you have a newer Super Duty and are looking for a higher quality set of manual hubs, I can highly recommend the Milemarker 549.
I don't believe there is Dave... I've looked into that before but maybe I missed an aftermarket set of vacuum lockers that exists... because while the factory hubs are junk, it's pretty convenient having them.
Just installed a set the other day, currently put 100 miles on them and they were making noise, upon removal & inspection there's some damage to the inside caps and metal shavings. I've called mile marker and they're sending replacements.
Was wondering which set of instructions you got with your hubs? The ones received with my hubs say to install the inner spline coupling first, the instructions on mile markers site say to install the external spline coupling first. Tech line couldn't tell me which was the correct way to install them. Thanks Sean
Inside spline first. The spring drops into the outside spline ring. I'm surprised you could even install it the other way. Because of the heavy design of the engagement teeth, you occasionally have to move the wheel slightly forward or backwards to achieve positive engagement when locking the hubs. The outer dial should be turned until it points precisely to the locked arrow. If you don't get it turned all the way, you won't have full engagement and this could result in the problem you experienced.
PDF attached are instructions on mile marker website.
Left spline Left cap with spline impressions
Right side has same damage, we’ll see when the new ones arrive if they’re any different. As for the two different instruction I’m at a loss. Thanks Sean
I followed the instructions in the box. I never even bothered checking the website for instructions. Clearly they need to address this discrepancy. Reading both instructions, it would appear that the online version was the original rendering and the one in the box was the final version. Notice that the verbage regarding the direction of the teeth is actually wrong on the version in the box. They changed the directions, copy and pasted, but forgot to change the in versus out of the teeth to correspond with the new illustration. This caused me some confusion when I read the instructions but the illustration is clear.
Last week I installed a new pair from Warn. These are the latest version and replace the previous chrome and black models, they are 100% stainless steel inside and out. I've had Warns on all my trucks in the past. Lifetime guarantee and a great reputation. Got them for $435.00

I bought a set of these at the same time as the Milemarkers. The cap and dial are made out of pot metal. They are definitely not made out of stainless steel. Here is the description from Warn on their website:
The hardest-working truck around deserves hubs to match: WARN Premium Locking Hubs. With heat treated gears, all-metal cap and dial, and corrosion-resistant stainless steel hardware, you get performance you can count on. From the company that began the off-road performance revolution more than a half-century ago.

Just the ones I chose,............... sorry
I emailed Warn to ask what the cap and dial are made from. The response I just received is below:
The Milemarker cap and dial are made from 304 stainless steel. The Milemarkers are simply the best manual hub you can buy for the 2005 and up Super Duty and cost $100 less than the Warn. The Warn is better than the OEM hub but I think it is very overpriced.
