I have a 2022 F450 pickup, and they seem to give fewer warning lights than the cab chassis trucks. I have had my truck converted for almost two years, and rarely (3-4 times) have the ABS/Traction control failure light come on. I do plan to get an aftermarket transmission tune to help the transmission shift a little smoother with the 6.17 gear. I do have my gear ratio configured to 4.88 and tire ratio to 2770 with Forscan. It's not bad at all but sometimes it's a little clunky when slowing down and then immediately getting on the gas. If you have it in trailer mode or are just a little easier on the throttle, it's no issue and shifts smoothly.

I do enjoy the torque from the 6.17 gears around town. If you tow heavy or you run 335/365 size tires, having the 6.17 gears is a very nice upgrade.

@jkndogtravels What year is your truck?

I would be worried about the stress on the few pinion teeth with 6.17 gears.

Call DBL Design and ask but I’m pretty sure he has sold over a thousand sets of gears for off-road fire trucks, armored trucks, etc.

i was more worried about breaking the Dana 60 front pinion so i went with their Pro 80 front axle.

you can break anything if you are abusing it but I think the 6.17 gears will be fine.

The last person I would ask about a product is the one selling that product. 6 pinion teeth puts a lot of stress on that one part.

@ F450 - My truck is a 2023 F600 cab chassis so a year newer with updated software over the 2022. I run the 33580r20's Michelin XZL's and the rig weighs in @ 20,000 to 22,000 pounds depending on fuel, water, and gear on board. So every drive is a heavy load, especially if we are towing the jeep. The stock gearing seems ok, a bit sluggish off the line, and the rig definitely loses some speed over the larger mountains out west. I did some pricing on the gear change from DBL it it was reasonable, now i just need to continue my due diligence on if I think it will be a good upgrade on the truck. Thanks for the feedback.

Yes,it is better to rely on a persons opinion on a forum that has never dealt with that particular gear ratio,LOL

The only time my truck complains is low speed with a hard left turn. I’m talking about 7-10mph and 35 degrees or more left. Doing a sharp turn in a circle or driving aggressively offroad. If I am a little less on the throttle or steering angle I don’t get the ABS traction control errors at all. There is a company with an aftermarket wheel speed sensor kit that is about $700 which supposedly fixes this issue 100% for the super single builds. It does require splicing into the wheel speed sensor wiring so I am not sure if it’s worth it to me. If it was plug and play that would make me feel better. I’m not affiliated with this company nor have I tested the product but sharing info. Incase anyone wants to spend $700 to test it out, here is the link:
https://bushel.biz/directdrive/tru-speed/

this “should” fix the speedo and wheel speed sensor from throwing ABS errors. I am thinking about doing a custom body control module tune to increase the tire size and a tcm tune to add the 6.17 gear ratio. We will see if I have time/money to play around with that this summer. For now my truck is good and that would just make it 11% better.

Anything can break but I personally know of several people running the 6.17 gears without issues on the SRW trucks in my area. I don’t want to start a keyboard war, I’m a tech guy not a mechanic so you probably know more about metallurgy and teeth profile that I do. I drove the truck with the stock 4.30 gears and the 6.17 gears and prefer the 6.17 as it’s much easier to drive around town and get up to speed. Your use case and needs are probably different than mine.

I have had my SRW conversion for 2.5 years now. I initially ran the 365 Goodyear tires and felt they were cool but too heavy. I felt braking and off the line performance was significantly improved by going with 335 Goodyears. Now my username is wrong haha but the truck is easier to drive around town.

I hope this info is helpful. I spent a ton of time and money trying different mods on my truck. It’s not for everyone but I really enjoy my setup.
