Have owned a 2016 f150 2.7 for several years now and I’m looking to goto a SD. The heaviest I haul is a 5500 lb camper during the summer months. I drive 5 min for work so I’m hesitant on getting a diesel as I don’t know what the daily short drive will do since diesels don’t warm up like gas. Thinking about going to the 6.2 gas but I’m hearing how underpowered it can be but also how much more maintenance would a diesel be? Been working on gas vehicles for 20 years so I’m familiar with those and a diesel would be a new animal to me. As for other hauling I have a boat and car trailer but those are a bit lighter than the camper. Looking for opinions and thoughts please…positives and negatives.
I live near Pittsburgh so winter months last from November-March
The 6.2l will do just fine for what you are towing. Our camper comes in around 8500 loaded. Given our location we almost always have a mountain pass to traverse and the 6.2l does just fine and I wouldn't consider it to be "underpowered". It does work on the hills - but typically it will easily hold 65+ up the passes at around 35-3800 rpm which I don't consider to be "screaming". I do have the 4.30 gears which I think helps. At the time I bought I had a 5 mile commute which has since been permanently eliminated, but I had similar concerns regarding the short commute. The 6.2l is also very reliable so in my opinion would make a good choice for you. I have just under 50k miles on mine - the majority of which are towing miles. Nothing but regular scheduled maintenance.
Any SD truck engine will do you fine but for the minimal price difference I'd opt for the 7.3 unless you just happen to find a screaming deal on a 6.2.
7.3 gas with 10 speed was my ideal truck. They're just super hard to find on the used market. I think you'd be happier with a gas engine. If you do buy a diesel GET the "rapid heat" option!
It sounds like your F150 should be up to the task, but if you want a heavier truck with more load capacity and increased braking capacity a F250 6.2 should be the ticket if buying used.

6.2 gas would be just fine 7.3 or 6.8 would be better diesel not needed .
5.0 f150 be plenty even .
You already have plenty of truck for what you say you will be doing as far as hauling and towing, plus the 2.7 F150 will get much better fuel economy.
If a new truck is all you crave, I would go for a newer F150 2.7 ecoboost.
What are the reasons that you want a SD? If your present 150 is not quite up to the task how about a F150 with the 3.5. The F150 should be fine with your trailer unless you are also loading it up with people and cargo. If that is the case an F150 with the heavy duty payload package may be a better option. If you do decide on a SD I would not get a diesel due to your short commute. I have a diesel because my camping trips usually are 2000+ miles and I want the better fuel economy.
I’m only looking to go to HD because the 2.7 doesn’t seem to have enough with the up and down hills in the Pittsburgh region. This camper with as boxy as it is seems to be giving the 2.7 all it wants. Its braking power seems a bit overmatched as well. I also don’t know what the future holds as for a larger camper so I want to have plenty incase that does happen. Since I’m in the truck market now I just want to make sure I have enough for the future so I don’t have to go buying another truck. Will the 6.2 be enough with say 10,000 lbs behind it?? Would it be alright with a 5th wheel?? The 7.3 gas seems good but this will definitely be purchased from the used side of the market so I guess itll be tougher.
I’m towing 7,000 lb camper with the 6.2l v8 and it is a fantastic engine. It revs willing and easily. Will out pull the V10 I had in my class C RV. I live in the east and we have short steep mountain and it will run under 4,000 RPM for all but the steepest hills.
You just need to be use to accelerating and lifting throttle in hills. Also locking down into 4th or 5th in certain terrain, using the same throttle method. Less likely to scream down into 3rd or 4th.

Thanks a lot for the responses
The SD will be a better platform for braking and stability. The ride empty will be noticeably rougher but I like a firm riding truck. It isn't as much the weight as the wind drag. So a 10,000 lb travel trailer which is a big one, is going to be easier to tow than any fifth wheel just because of the wind drag. If I was going to tow that much with the 6.2 the 4.30 gears would be top of my list. Just a few times a year and a driver the rest of the time. I think I would get a 6.2. The 7.3 10 speed is a worthwhile upgrade. The diesel will eliminate your power concerns while towing. They all work, some better than others.
