Have read a lot of muffler opinions on the V10 forum and others. Been a while since I've done so, and now, suddenly, I am in the market. I have a 2000 SD V-10 that has generated the ugliest buzz from within the muffler (49,000 miles and the dealer said I am out of luck - Even with Ford's ESP to 75k).
Had always thought I would do the Flowmaster 40 or 50 - I want to stick with the stock pipes, don't need lots of loud, but do want a little attitude. Truck just sounds like it really needs to breath better. Local muffler shop told me I would hate the sound of the Flowmaster 40 on the V-10 -
Recommendations???
Thoughts????
Will I notice a performance improvement by just doing the muffler??
Dealer claims that the part is not covered - Said that since it is not an emmisions related component, I'm out of luck. Clearly a defective part. No rust, just a bad baffle or something inside that buzzes like crazy at 900 and 1700 RPM. Have removed the heat shield to no avail.
Not that you shouldn't take that hunk of overweight crap off...
I heard the sound clip from HeavyAssaults truck. Does sound hot, and the truck looks great by the way, but may be more noise then I am looking for. Anyone have any other ideas for a replacement? Would prefer more of a low rumble then a thrashy sound. Am I gonna find this for a V10?
I started out with dual FM 50's on my '65 GTO with a 400 in it and you couldn't even stay in the car. So I'm gonna go with dual, big block, FM 70's on my V-10. Same as I'm running on my GTO nice quiet ,and deep rumble until you jump on it, then it roars. 'Course it is 425 horsepower. Any way I don't think you'll be happy with FM 40's, too darn loud and tinny sounding.
Decided I would go to the source to ask their opinion about the series 50 or 70 for the V10. I called the sales department from the number on the Flowmaster brochure. I told him I was looking for a muffler for the truck, and he stopped me and said "I cannot recommend any flowmaster product for the V10". He said if you want your truck to sound like a 2 stroke Yamaha, then go for it. He said it has to do with the firing sequence and other factors about it being a V10. Same for Dodge. He told me I would have a much better sound with a Dynomax. (Remember, this is a Flowmaster sales rep). I told him about all you guys that are running the FM40 and he couldn't believe it. He claims that most shops that get talked into installing one end up taking them off. Same with 50 and 70. To each his own.
Had to like his honesty.
Gonna check out Dynomax - Anyone have any experience with these???
I got talked out of a Flowmaster 40 when I went for an aftermarket at the shop. They said the same stuff... I purchased a Dynomax and way too quiet. Sounded like factory with dual pipes. So, spent $50 and got what I wanted and had it installed. Reason people have the FM's cut off is b/c they want that V-8 sound... LET it GO!!! Never gonna happen. Trust me, mine doesn't sound like a 2 stroke Yamaha!! Adding different styles of tips or resonators do help!
My advice.....find someone who has what you want installed and check it out for yourself... Everyone's tastes is different!!
I will say, when my truck is under the carport, it rattles the whole house! But, it quiets out as soon as it hits overdrive!
