I can't believe the FM rep told you that. Something was up his @$% that day w/ Ford V10's. I've had the 70 Series, and didn't want to go w/ a full blown 40. And anyways the FM 40 series doesn't come in a 3" I/O anymore. You'll have to get the 2 1/2" and widen the ends to 3" since all inner chamber are 3" anyways. I opted for the 30 series. Louder than the 50 but not as loud as the 40. Small case for good flow and scavenges the exhaust better than any other series. I have a digital camera that I found out by accident has streaming video for 5 second clips that has terrific sound. I just don't know where I can upload it to.

I just had a Magnaflow straigh-thru muffler with 3" pipe put on my '01 V10, and it has a very moderate sound to it, also upped the fuel mileage. not bad for a single exhaust still.

Anyone out there have one of these or heard one??
This from a post that I started when I had my duals install. The 50 series 3" in and dual 2.5" with 3" tips, the truck sounds great when you stump on it and you almost can't hear it inside. Check my gallerie.

"Well guys I just came back from the muffler shop, installed the 50 series Flowmaster, 3" in 2.5" duals with 3.5 Chrome tips, this truck sounds "SWWWEEEEEEEEEEEETTTTTTTT!! I love it, not loud inside at all and when you punch it, this V10 roars, check my gallery out. That other muffler shop, the one that said the truck will loose power and torque, well they are full of it, guys thanks again for your help"
Originally posted by pwhopkins Decided I would go to the source to ask their opinion about the series 50 or 70 for the V10. I called the sales department from the number on the Flowmaster brochure. I told him I was looking for a muffler for the truck, and he stopped me and said "I cannot recommend any flowmaster product for the V10". He said if you want your truck to sound like a 2 stroke Yamaha, then go for it. He said it has to do with the firing sequence and other factors about it being a V10. Same for Dodge. He told me I would have a much better sound with a Dynomax. (Remember, this is a Flowmaster sales rep). I told him about all you guys that are running the FM40 and he couldn't believe it. He claims that most shops that get talked into installing one end up taking them off. Same with 50 and 70. To each his own.
Had to like his honesty.
Gonna check out Dynomax - Anyone have any experience with these???
Thanks
Well, you spoke to a moron at FM. Sad reflection on their sales reps. Listen, the V10 will never sound like a V8 with that lope it has b/c of the timing and firing order, like he pointed out. If that is the sound you want, then this is the wrong engine to do that with. What it does sound like, with a FM40 or other nice sounding muffler, is a hollering Indy car at WOT. Not a 2-stroke. A lot of people it seems that have modded their V10 with a muffler have used the FM brand, and usually the FM40. There are also some cool Dynomax and Magnaflow installs out there - just use the search feature of the forums here to see past threads. I have a clip too of my FM40 if you want to hear it. See my FTE website on the left next to my avatar (or, look for a slightly modified version of this clip on www.exhaustsoundclips.com).
I've read a number of other posts on this site concerning the muffler topic. One of the discussions concerned the loss of low end torque. Sounds like the after-market mufflers provide high-end performance and the expense of low-end torque. If your not towing anything then maybe this isn't an issue for you.
I have been wanting a new muffler since I bought my truck (16k miles ago) and today I was reading this thread and said to myself, "Self, why do you keep waiting? You have read EVERYTHING on this site about mufflers and the overwhelming response it Flowmaster 40!"
Well, self told me to just do. I did it. I love it. I was amazed that the shop could get me in so fast! Drove over and was done in less than an hour. I had a nice chrome tip put on and had them angle it so it comes out at the corner instead of right behind the wheel.
SOUNDS AMAZING!!!
Wife gets in the truck and tells me it sounds great. Then immediately says, "I'm cold, can we roll up the windows?". I told her yes but she had better not turn on the damn radio!

That's a riot!! Glad to hear you like the new sound.

Thanks. I haven't had it on the highway yet so I don't know what it sounds like above 50mph. But I went though almost a 1/4 tank of gas ripping around town! Woo hoo!
I think the wife is tired of hearing all about the new "sound".
Interesting thread. No mention of the Gibson cat-back system. I installed one almost four years ago. I don't notice any offensive noise in the truck, but many say they can hear me coming 1/4 mile away. It howls, as the the V10 should, when you really step into it. Two stroke motorcycle though - no way. It beats the snot out of the factory set up.
I would believe the lack of Gibson posts are due to the lack of sound/video files. There are a few REALLY good vids of a 40 series that I usually post for people with a question on the sound. If you can post a sound or vid sample I think you may see more competition from Gibson.
Not knocking any product or trying to endorse another, but if it works good then let others know.

I agree 100%. I read everything I could find and found lots of clips of the Flowmaster. I would have considered others but not without hearing them first.
I am 100% happy with my new FM40 and there is no offensive noise in the cab. I think with any loud exhaust you will hear it to an extent.
Dwinn or anyone I would like to hear more about losing low end torque. When the exhaust goes I'd like to put something different on my van. I tow a 32ft TT and don't want to lose my low end torque
I found the same low end loss to be noticeable but not a real negative to the overall feel of the trucks power. While talking to someone about a supercharger I was told the headers would cause the low end loss but hard to feel when using a SC (yea go figure). So I called BORLA and discussed this problem and how could I fix it. They shipped to me two venturris or reducer cones, they fit inside and provide the back pressure to prevent the low end loss. They were welded in where the headers and y-pipe bolt together. Well the guys at the exhaust shop thought it was weird, but the difference is wortht the strange looks. I now have back the low end and still have a free flowing exhaust. I drive around town quite a bit and noticed the difference in a matter of minutes.
