Weird Transmission Issue

I purchased my 77 F100 Custom Explorer a few weeks ago. All stock, 400/C6. The guy I bought it from had replaced much of the steering and suspension, wheel bearings etc. While at highway speeds today it suddenly veered hard to the right. Followed by that was a some vibration and noise. It became sluggish to accelerate and acted like it wanted to die. Was able to get it home and immediately began to drip right at what I’d imagine is the front seal. It has stopped. Don’t have a trans cooler; will need to get that taken care of. It also doesn’t have a fan shroud and was very close to overheating. I’m very new to this, I know very little. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Will have to inspect more tomorrow in the daylight but everything else looks intact underneath.

Are you sure there is no trans cooler? The trans would not last vary long with out one.
Look on the right side of the trans for 2 metal lines heading to the front of the truck.
Follow them and see if they dont go into the radiator tank. If so that is the trans cooler but I also like to add a larger 2nd one after the radiator cooler before going back to the trans.

What dose the trans fluid look and smell like?
It should red in color not brown and not smell burnt.
If it dose not have a cooler then I would have to say the trans is cooked and needs a rebuild.

Oh that leak could be from the trans when it over heated.
I cant remember if there is a vent up top on the out side by the bell housing or if it is in the bell housing?

But none of that would explain why the veered to the right?
Vibration maybe if a bushing went bad in the trans?
I would get the truck up in the air at all 4 corners and check everything.
Mostly the front suspension and wheel bearing / brakes.
Spin if you can each wheel, truck out of gear for the rear wheels, and see how they spin, they should be free.

You can then start it and put it in gear and see if the rear wheels spin and have any leaksand go from there.

Are you sure you didn't have a caliper hang up or something? I can't see how an issue with the trans would have caused it to pull to the right. This would bog you down pretty bad and could have caused the trans to get hotter than normal if you're really pushing it hard. Did it feel like it was slipping? RPM climbing higher than normal? The drip may be coming from the vent.

Thanks, Dave. I’m going to get it in the air this weekend and verify all of your questions. I am not 100% on Trans Cooler.

Fluid doesn’t smell burnt and is still the same condition as when filled. It spilled maybe a quarter of a quart. I’m thinking that it could have possibly overheated and spilled out. Will need to verify vent isn’t clogged. There isn’t a fan shroud so I will remedy that too.

that is entirely possible. Brakes were completely redone prior to purchase so something could have gone haywire.

It did brake differently after the incident so I will have to check that up in the air. Also a new rag joint and new steering gear box that I will check to make sure it isn’t loose anywhere.
