I know there are a lot of folks out there a lot smarter than me, so please tell me if I'm mistaken. Electical systems have never been my strong point, but I'm more than willing to learn.

The drop in voltage is due to the resistance of the wire, and it is normal. The system is wired so that the resistance wire is bypassed when the key is in the "start" position and not bypassed when in the "run" position.
