I currently have a Ford 390 with a T98. I want to change to a T18. Is the T18 a 4 speed? I don't like the granny gear on the T98. Will this be a direct swap or will driveshaft lenght need to be adjusted?
I thought the T-18 was a 4 speed with a granny gear (6:67 or 6:68) just like the NP-435. I have never owned or worked on a T-98, so I have to ask what is wrong with the granny gear? Are you looking for a transmission with a closer ratio?
I guess since I never use the granny gear I wanted a trans that actually has 4 usable gears. If the T18 is basically the same as the T98, I might as well leave it alone. Does a T19 have 4 forward gears without a granny?
The T-19 has a granny gear as well. Try a toploader out of a car. If you dont subject your truck to really harsh loads, I would think it wouls hold up fine. I you do haul heavy stuff once in awhile, look for a toploader that was behind a 428CJ.
A T19 from an 83-87 2wd Diesel or 460 truck has 4 syncronised gears, with first being 4.02:1, the diesel 4x4 units have the same gear ratios, but, the 460 4x4's got the 6.32:1 first gear, the same gearset as a T18A, only with first syncronised.
