Why is it that computers are such stupid annoying little things. I have been enjoying a couple of weeks with no problems, until today. My computer, with no reason, lost the network. It could still access the internet, just not the network that I had access to 35 minutes earlier. I did all of the usual things to find the network and the computer decided to loose it's usual start up routine, and start asking me for a password to logon with. IT HAS NEVER done this before, so why is it doing it now. I hit OK without a password, it starts and works, but why the hassle and why now.. I HATE COMPUTERS I know that they will eventually kill me. The only thing that can get me screaming and ranting is a damn computer....
It is so annoying. I want to go shoot the thing with my shotgun, so as there is no possible way for me to ever fix the thing again. I am fed up with it, them and any others I may be foolish enough to purchase..... GRRRRRR
Whenever I get pissed at mine, I think of it this way. He may be refusing to cooperate, but I can just leave and go have a life. He's stuck in that room, with that stupid blue screen. And I can always just pull his plug too...
OS Version of the offending machine (service pack too if applicable)
Network topography (peer to peer or PDC)
What have you changed recently. - anything.
I am cursed with technoaptitude, perhaps I can help.
Windows 98 SE
I have not got the faintest idea.. There is a router, a bunch of computers, and a cable modem.
I have changed NOTHING AT ALL. not a thing, nada, non.... It just did it.
I hope you can make some suggestions, though I quite liked the one with the tire...
OF interest, none of the other computers can access any of the other computers, though two of them can see all of them. The other two can't see anyone.
(One is the laptop, that I am using now. It runs XP home, and has it's own ideas about doing things.
- I think I busted a nail/claw, but I grabbed the last bush before the cliff so I guess I'm doing all right!!! (figure of speach, I haven't been off-road in a while...)
I just got in the door, and am firing off a few quick ones.
When you bring it back up start the cable modem first, then the router, then the pc's.
Holler if that doesn't do it. WIN98SE's bad about mucking up the TCP/IP stack bound to the network card as a result of a power failure, it may have to be nuked and replaced (about 30 seconds plus two reboots and no trip to NAPA required).
Windows 98se is not the best OS for networking with a router. The first thing that I would check is to make sure that your PC's are in the same work group. You can find this out by looking in network Neighborhood.
I would also suggest upgrading to Windows XP. You will not have those problems.
It occures to me, WIN98 uses NetBEUI for LAN and TCP/IP for WAN natively.
WIN XP uses TCP/IP for both LAN & WAN natively but the stack referres to a NETBEUI translator for legacy support of their own OS's.
To translate that to . . human, language; for whatever reason your router is not routing NetBEUI packets.
I don't guess you have an old fashioned Ethernet hub, or 10/100 switch laying around do you? We can test this theory quick as a wink by taking the router out of the loop and seeing if the workstations can again talk to each other.
