So, I recently purchased a 1956 project which is driveable, but not complete. As I'm getting into it, my list of questions is growing. The first one I have is about the frame. Are the 1953-56 frames all the same? I ask because i was thinking of getting a donor frame and making the modifications like IFS and fuel tank relocation then swap body onto it. This way I can still use the truck while doing the chassis upgrades.
If they are the same, that would increase my odds of finding one. Any help would be appreciated.

Reason: Make title more specific
I know that 53-55 are the same, not positive about 56.
You should take into consideration that the new frame vin will not match the title, may or may not be a big deal depending on where you are going to license it, could also affect resale value.
Keep in mind that the title goes with the frame. Swapping them could be an issue if you do not have a title with the new frame.
I am no expert but I believe the basic frames are the same. There are some differences such as the 1956 front shock mounts are different. I do not know if crossmembers are different with the 1953 flathead engine.
There are several experts on this forum that will give you more info.
If you have a legitimate title with your truck, and the frame is in good shape, I would consider using it. If you are going with an engine over 300 horsepower, I would also consider boxing the frame.

Good luck with your build.
Like M2HB said get a title with any frame you buy. The frame is the legal entity associated with VIN in most states. That being said your 56' sheetmetal could up "legally" titled as a 53-55 if you used a 53-55 FRAME and matching VIN. JUST a thought. I have a bare 56' frame in middle Tennessee with a clear VIN number matching title in my name. Best wishes in your pursuits.
Thank you for the info. My frame has been molested already with a volare ifs and it's possibly a shortened long bed or pieced together . There is a welded seam and plate just behind the cab on both sides (I didn't notice before purchasing). I'm not sure if it is the original frame or where to look for a VIN on the frame. There are a couple other things that bother me, like the right rear of the truck "sags", maybe a weaker leaf spring? There also seams to be excessive gap between the running board vertical panel and the bottom of the truck bed wall. All the truck pictures I see the two pieces mate up tight. I have a 3/4" gap. Anyway, these are additional reasons for me looking for another frame. It's a shame, because its rust free.

Reason: Adding picture
If it was a long bed, then it may have been a f-250.
Since you want a modern front end, you could keep the Volare IFS or remove it without too much effort, once the frame is stripped down.
The first thing I would do is find the VIN on the frame. Most of the time they seem to be on top of the right frame rail, a few inches in front of the cab.
Numbers should be stamped on top of the frame rail under the cab too. All the 56 frames I have are stamped on the left frame rail by the steering box and centre of the cab..Canadian made . You could get a F100 with an 8 foot bed in 56's, can't say for the 53-55 models..
Not sure if I agree with that 100% While I understand what you're trying to say, you can be speeding in a school zone, not knowing it's a school zone and still get in trouble. You can stamp numbers on a frame to match your papers, but that action is still illegal, and certainly prosecutable, whether you sell it or not. There's an old saying that goes "Ignorance of the law is no excuse." Prosecutors like that a lot, especially if they get a big enough bee in their bonnet.
