I've never messed w/ a ZF6 so I honestly don't know, but is there access to show it some love in the form of a rubber mallet? It may need jarred a little to break the 20 year old seal so to speak.
They usually have 2 flats or a square on them so you can put a adjustable or Chanel locks on them and turn them. I've always just been able to get them out with just my hand.
Push in, then turn. 1/8 turn, 1/4 max, IIRC. The tabs sit in a shallow recess so you have to push it in before you rotate. Sometimes a little leverage helper, aka 2x2 or big pry bar of some sort gets it started, but bottom line, it has to push in a bit before it will turn.
I’m still unable to remove it. If I pry on it, it wants to go in but it’s got so much pressure on it that I need some serious strength to remove it. Im only able to get one half of it pushed in or the other. There’s really nothing to pry against either. The transmission was removed on this truck about 3 years ago so it’s not really seized in there. It feels like I’m fighting the clutch spring with my hands just trying to push it in. I’m going through and removing everything else in the process and hopefully when it’s on the tranny jack and angled down a bit more I can finagle it free. Still looking for any more advice on getting it to push inward
Transmission is out and will be dropped off at the shop today! I did not pull the clutch and pressure plate off to look at it but is there a way to inspect how much life my clutch has without disassembling? It’s never given me any issues but with the trans out of the way I might as well check. Is there anything else I should do with the trans out? I think I’m going to try to do the valley drain redirection mod to it. Throw out bearing? Pilot bearing? Anything else? I’ve read about alot of input shaft issues with bad pilot bearings. What am I looking for on my input shaft to determine if it’s good or bad?
I will check when I get back from work, if there is play is that something that is usually on the bearing or the input shaft itself? the trans is getting a full rebuild and I'd love to not have to buy a new input shaft for it as well. If there is no play and there is some damage to the front of the shaft where the bearing rides, is this something that can be remedied with the repair kit or oilite bushing? I'm hoping to not have to be waiting on any parts so the guy can quickly turn it around for me, even though I will be waiting on myself to rebuild the transfer case most likely.
It's been awhile and sadly I still don't having a drivable truck. I had given the shop all the parts needed for the rebuild...or so I thought. After he disassembled the whole thing he found that the rebuild kit did not come with the 2nd,3rd,5th, or reverse race. I am having a hard time locating a reverse race. every website I've checked out says it is in stock and then I call to confirm and it is infact not in stock. He already removed the old ones by cutting them off so they cannot be reused either. I have rebuilt the transfer case already and was really hoping to have a running truck before christmas but things aren't looking too promising. if for some reason somebody has an extra reverse race for sale, send me a PM.
Dang sorry to hear. By chance did you reach out to the Idaho Transmission place I linked in my t case thread? Those dudes were super knowledgeable and had used parts too…. I’ll try and find their contact info.
I did not reach out to them but I will. I talked with a guy with midwest trans that gave me alot of info. Thankfully the guy rebuilding my trans used to be a ford tech in 2000 and worked alot with the zf6 so he is very knowledgeable as well.
I appreciate the help. The allstate gear one says its available until you hit add to cart. Alot of places have that. one website says "41 available" but then when I contacted them they said its unavailable with no estimate on when it'll be stocked. I will be calling the other two.
edit: I called finditparts and they said they had 1 left in stock. I quickly ordered that! Good find! I was starting to lose hope after contacting 12 different companies. If for some reason it doesn't go through, I did contact midwest trans again and they did have some in stock since they do rebuilds in house. However, they wanted $45 for it and whatever shipping. It is a backup option but I would rather not pay that much for a $10 bushing.
After a VERY long time of my trans sitting in a transmission shop torn apart, it has finally been put back together and brought home! hopefully going to be putting it back in this week but my helper (girlfriend) is out of the country for the next two weeks so hopefully I don't drop the beast on myself. Cant wait to have a working truck again! I put the oilite bushing in even though the pilot bearing that was in there was fine. Clutch had plenty of material left on it still. I had the syncros and main shaft replaced, is there any break in procedure I should be aware of despite it not having new gears in it?
