When installing the thermostat and water pump gasket, the factory service manual says to simply "Position a new gasket, coated on both sides with sealer..." without giving any specon what type of "sealant" to use.
What type of "sealant" do you all use for this ? I am assuming Permatex 22071 Water Pump and Thermostat gasket sealant ?
You simply need to glue the gasket to the pump
Leave the block side dry
I use Edelbrock Gasgacinch
Ford used to make a good gasket adhesive (not any more)
The thermostat the same, glue the gasket on the housing after putting the thermostat in it

Thanks for the reply I appreciate it. That Gasgacinch looks promising, I am kind of stuck without my vehicle until I get this wataer pump on so have to figure out how to get to Oreilly's today.
Another question though - the actual Factory Service Manual (I have a physical copy/version, I'm not talking about Haynes but the actual Ford FSM) says to put sealant on BOTH sides of the gasket. Is there a reason I should not do it that way if I use the Gasgacinch ?
The problem children do get gasket adhesive on both sides
The reason not to, is ease of installation next time
It is hell to scrape gaskets that are glued on, and sealer is usually not necessary at all
So sealer on one side to hold things together, especially the thermostat so it stays in the groove
Sealer both sides with a warped or a gouged-up surface
I have been known to use it on both sides of intake gaskets water ports that get pitted
Adhesive on both sides is for sure okay
Thanks all for the input. I appreciate it. I already had the Permatex water pump gasket stuff en route from Amazon so I guess I will use that but I wish I would have gotten this Edelbrock Gascacinch. I will apply to both sides and hopefully all will be good.
