96 Ex AWD Question

This is the first AWD I have ever owned. When making sharp turns do you get that binding noise as you do with regular 4WD when they are engaged?

Yes, especially if there is any loose gravel on ground...
The system works by measuring wheel speed at each frt wheel and 1 sensor on rear diff., tight turns the outside wheel turns much faster than inside and activates system.....

I believe my 96 AWD just drives the front wheels through an open differential which is in turn driven by a viscous clutch in the transfer case.

Do you have the standard size tires on there? Otherwise, could be a CV joint or the differential. I think CV joints usually make a clicking noise when they're failing, but might be something to look at. Also, I saw another thread you might want to look at:

Yea, I have a slight moaning sound which I believe is typical in a tight, slow turn. It sounds like it may be coming thru the transfer case and not the wheels.

There is no grinding sound. There is just a binding noise like with a normal 4wd.
