Rear axle

Hello,

I have a bit of an issue, I am restoring a 1948 F2. The rear axle is not repaireble unfortunately. The rear pinion bearing explodet once and granadet the diff gears, bearings and housing. I can't find gears, pinion or bearings. Now I want to use a different rear axle. I heard almost every axle until 1970 of a F250 shoud fit. The thing realy is that I live in the Netherlands and can't find a good axle. Is there some way I can find one en get it shipped to the Netherlands?

Regards,
Kollin

Hi Kollin,

I rebuilt a 49 F3 a couple of years ago and I installed a rear from a 69 F250. It was bolt in.

You will not find that axle in Europe I suspect, but I am willing to help here if you are not in a huge hurry. I live in Germany now, after having lived in the US for the past 3 decades. I still own property there and my company operates here in Europe and the US.
If you can find a suitable axle in the US (there are websites from junkyards that show the inventory in cars they have - that's how I found my axle), it could get shipped to our US location, and arrangements could be made to ship it to Europe (our German HQ is less than 2 hours from Amsterdam) via our freight carriers.
I cannot promise or say for sure that this would work out, or that It would make sense cost-wise, but could be an option. The shipment to and between facilities with loading docks is much easier to arrange...

One other note, I replaced the bearings, seals and axle nuts (the last of which are not quite so common) as a why-not measure. If you go the F250 axle route, I can help you with getting the right items here, too. There are some differences in the parts as there was a mid-year change (I think in 1969), if I remember correctly.

Best,
Andreas

Parts to rebuild stock Timken Model 51524 axle are available, especially through eBay where many have international shipping options. It helps to search with the original Ford parts numbers, and don't worry about the application the seller lists as long at the part number is correct as many of these parts had many applications over time:

Spider/Pinion Shaft: 61-4211
Differential Side Gear Thrust Washers: 61-4228
Differential Pinion Gears: 7RY-4315
Differential Pinion Gear Thrust Washers: 7RY-4230
Standard 4.875 Ratio Gear set: 01Y-4203-B
Optional (Chassis Listed) 4.11 Ratio Gear set: 01Y-4203-A

Another good resource is Chuck at http://www.chuckstrucksllc.com/. Giving him a phone call to discuss options and his inventory.

Here is the full breakdown and lists:
