Who's done them, and how did you do it?
I was under the impression you had enough space to lift the motor as it sits to gain the room needed to do the swap. I did not have that kind of success.
I removed the 4 large 21mm (L&R) nuts securing the mounts to the cross member, loosened the 2 drivers mount 13mm bolts, I removed the 2 tranny mount 21mm nuts, I was only able to raise the engine a few inches. When I let it rest back down, it did not settle into the same place, I had to raise the pass side to re-center the engine back on the cross member. For now I just put it all back together.
It looks like from what I'm reading and seeing, the CAC pipes have to come off, the spider has to come off, possibly the starter, and front drive shaft too for jacking blocks Etc. And maybe the the transmission cross-member should be removed and the tail supported separately?
Funny, I only found instructions in the shop manual for the 5.4, and V10 mounts. I posted in the Excursion forum too, which is home...
Are you current mounts broken or sending engine vibration into the cab? When I did my engine at 105k, the mounts were replaced then, but the originals were still in good shape. I only replaced them as a matter of routine, but the rubber buffers weren't even starting to crack yet.
They are good as far as I know, body mounts are needed more than the motor mounts. I'll get to those later. I just wanted them replaced. I probably have to follow the guidance in this only video I found to get them out.
I've been curious about this as well as my truck vibrates more than it should. Is this difficult to do with engine in the truck? OP please circle back if you do replace them, would like to know if the mounts have any bad spots that you couldn't see when they were in place.
Right now it's difficult, because I'm not doing the swap correctly. Once I have time, and no camping trips planned, I will remove whatever I see in my way, and go from there. A small reason that led me to replace was sometimes when I turn the truck off, I recently get a knock/clunk, kinda like when the engine rests but gives a little feedback stopping partially on a compression stroke. So I thought just do motor mounts and see where that leaves me.

I would be more suspicious of a flex plate than a motor mount on that one. Sorry.

That may be. I have a spare transfer case I'm going to do a full rebuild on, chain, seals, bearings etc, I will have the opportunity to look over the tranny then, which is 7 years old now
I've been lurking FTE for a dozen years. Nobody ever has broken motor mounts. Never.
Start at the beginning with the symptoms so we can help diagnose.
Regardless of any noise or suspicion I may have, I'm content to replace my mounts merely based on their age. I'm just looking for anyone who has replaced them to offer advise on how they did it. Not sure if you saw my thread, but I just replaced the drivers air bag with a new one from Ford because the paint is starting to come off in the lower corner. This is simply how I maintain my vehicles.

I think that's what we are trying to tell you... we simply haven't seen anyone find the need to change their motor mounts in a 99-03 7.3L.
If you change yours, and take a lot of good photos and offer your advise on how you did it, we can put your write up in the Tech Folder, as we will finally have someone who has.

LOL, yes, mine will be changed. I was hoping to NOT be the guinea pig for this, but I'm seeing it's not a popular part replacement. The video I posted gives me enough to move forward, I now know I should plan a complete free weekend with no travel plans in sight for a few weeks, just in case this ends up like the top end refresh I did 2 years ago that turned into 2 injector cups leaking surprise, and a month of down time.
FWIW, my mechanic was recently doing some other work and informed me I have a cracked motor mount. So I guess I'll be replacing that sooner than later.

Maybe he's wrong. According to post #7 that never happens...
I'll re visit mine soon, I'm in need to reorder CAC boots, I replaced them with OE a few years back, but they are spongy, so aftermarket it is for them.
