Oil filter warning ⚠️

Just wanted to let some unsuspecting folks know that Motor craft oil filters must be inspected upon removal on the Super duty trucks.......the filter gasket sticks to the housing.

I changed oil for the 3rd time today on a 2021 F250 7.3 gas and all 3 times the rubber gasket stuck.
Yes been changing oil for 50 years and know that pre-lubing is required.

I'm in know way questioning the quality of Motor craft oil filters, simply trying to help someone avoid a big mess.
Simply remove the filter, shine a light and pull the old gasket off the housing, install new filter.

The gasket usually sticks with cheap filters. Try a Wix next time.

Gaskets on all filters at fluid changes should be checked to Insure they haven't come off old filter and left behind always. Non issue.

Nothing new, and not just Motorcraft filters on Fords, every time, on every car with every brand of oil filter, you should check to make sure the gasket didn't get left behind.

Strange I just changed my oil and the gasket was stuck to the housing....It was a wix, as said already, they all stick and we should be checking every single one that we take off every single car/tuck/moped.

About 45 years ago, I learned the hard way to always make sure the gasket comes off and make sure the surface the gasket contacts is clean. Takes less than a minute to dump 5 quarts on the garage floor.

In close to 40 years of changing oil on gas engines, diesel engines, and some smaller engines with filters I have never had an o ring stick to the filter mating surface, and rarely did the o ring separate from the filter upon removal. I always put oil on the o ring seat and threads, always. It may be that I will experience it in the future but not so far. That being said, I always look to ensure the o ring is on the filter when removed because I always heard that they can stick.

As long as I've been wrenching on cars I've known to check for the old oil filter gasket when doing the filter change. I don't recall ever having one actually stick to the filter housing. I do have a friend that had the oil filter gasket from the new filter fall off during install. He was unaware that it happened and drove about 5 miles. Says he lost about 2 gallons (out of 3).

Same here, but not quite that long ago. Had the ring stick to the housing on my ‘81 Bronco 351M. Made quite a mess in a hurry. I’ve always checked since then and have only had one seal come off the filter since.

I do wish I still had that Bronco. It was even a freewheeling package although I didn’t know it at the time. Just thought it had cool reflective orange graphics…

This goes for any oil filter on any engine but I do find it surprising because I'm almost at 20 oil changes on my 7.3 and I've yet to have one gasket stick ti the block. I've used the MC filters as well as Wix, Champ XL, Fram, etc

Maybe I just have bad luck but I have had more than a few oil filters leave their gasket on the filter housing. I didn't notice it once on my 04.5 Dodge until I checked the oil next time I fueled up and noticed I was a few quarts off. No damage done just felt dumb.

I've never had an o-ring not come off with the filter. I've done 12 7.3 oil changes with MC filters and not one stuck. How tight are you guys putting the filter on?

🤦🏼‍♂️

It's good practice to always check for the gasket when removing a filter. Brand doesn't matter.
