SPE cold side kit.

Bought the spe hot and cold side kit a few years ago and finally installed it this summer.

what attracted me to this cold side kit was the aluminum manifold with 3 npt ports on it. Which I planned to use for methonal injection.

but..I did an awe sh&$ when I set it up.

i wanted the injector holes at the 11,12,1 o’clock position.. which resulted in the mass sensor being at 6:00 position….bad…move on the sensor position…after a few mass cels and a few emissions not ready …I decided to check the mass sensor…found it sitting in a pool of water ….this tells me 2 things…bad mass sensor position…spray setting is with too low…

so I put the mass sensor at 12:00 and will change my spray setting to at least 10psi.

Oe I need to drive it around to do the readiness blah, blah, blah.

with the spe setup.. mass sensor on one side…3 not ports on the other.. you will spray your mass sensor at low psi spray settings.

may need to find away of putting the mass sensor more up stream so it does not get sprayed if I can’t get the emissions readiness cleared.

here’s a pic of what it should not look like.

6:00 position is not a good place for a map sensor. Rotated it tob12:00. Also changed the AEM controller to start spraying at 12psi . Hopefully that will prevent puddling .

Oh yeah... I know that page well... I've perused it many times.. Thanks for the pic. I just meant a pic of the SPE cold pipe installed, but that was great as it showed what the problem was.

Longer lasting, stronger than the OEM part. The 17-22 all use the same CAC pipe, they don't seem to fail as often as the previous gen, but they still do. From what I've seen it looks like the oil in the tube weakens the pipe material which then cracks. Performance differences, if any, would probably be negligible.

Not sure if SPE does, but the H&S silicone CAC pipe has an inner material that is supposed to be even more oil resistant.

Ah, so more of a longevity than a performance thing. At some point I want to eliminate all the oil that can get ingested with the SPE cheesegrator and a catch can. When I have the money to buy the stuff of course. With the crappy economy, finding it hard to stay ahead anymore. Between electric and fuel costs and winter coming on, and needing to get 5 tons of pellets, which have also gone way up, going to be a while before I have spare cash. My insurance has also gone up which yesterday was the start of the next 6 month cycle.

At least the farm exemption came through for this years real estate taxes.

I didn't put my Rudy's pipe on for performance. I did for reliability. Granted I don't tow but I wanted it for peace of mind.

The nice thing about the setups like the SPE, S&B, H&S, etc... is that they are two piece... easier to install than the multi piece kits like my Rudy's and you don't have to worry about the metal tube sliding out of the upper hose coupler that goes to to the throttle body adapter. That happened prior to me installing my S&S and I just let it rest against one of the plastic coolant line fittings that's there. But getting it clean and applying hairspray on the couplers/tubes will prevent that.

Another nice thing about the SPE kit is that it has the ports in the throttle body adapter.

there’s some spooky bananas going on with the spe collar with the npt ports .

on a stock setup, the air temp sensor is about 6” before the butterfly valve …..on the spe setup…they put the sensor opposite the npt ports. So if you use the npt ports for methonal injection.. your spraying the air temp sensors.

it seems to be a problem at low start boot settings ….a problem if you start boost at 5 to 10 psi, not a problem if you start at 12 to 15 psi.

i would rather be at 10 psi start …I rarely achieve 15psi with local city driving.

Possibly looks like no real world testing with methanol injection with that adapter of theirs. Because you are seeing the problems of this first hand. Have you contacted them to see their reaction on this?

It almost as if they should have made their adapter longer like S&Bs here so the ports could be in front of the air temp sensor.

If I decided to get a new cold pipe kit, I'd go with something like S&Bs here and just install threaded insert(s) into the aluminum tube ahead of the sensor with some epoxy to hold it in there...

I looked at my Rudy's pipe and there's room in the adapter to put in 1/8 NPT ports which would place the methanol injectors after the IAT sensor in the second metal piece, the curved tube that goes to the silicone coupler from the adapter and to the silicone hose coming from the CAC. But I'm a LONG WAYS off from even being close to doing methanol injection...

If you decide to do that, here's the link to the post on Pat's blown CAC cold pipe thread here... get on EBay and look for a cheaper kit.

Looks like the pusher cold side is what I need.

it had the temp sensor port in the oem position…and you can add up to 4 npt’s and it looks like in the video they are placed in a good spot.

Yummy

Yep, I'm thinking down the line if I decide to upgrade my Rudy's pipe, I'd go with this... But how many extra ports???

Nice catch... I knew they made them but never looked into them that closely...
