My 1978 F-100, 302, had not been running for months. I replaced the carb and got it back into action. The truck has a 180 degree thermostat - however while driving it around, the temp gauge reads a steady 210 degrees.
What is this indicating (beside overheating) and what do I need to do?
If it hasnt run much recently, there is also the possibility that the lower water passages have been packed off with rust. I've had 3 engines recently, that when I popped out the freeze plugs, there was a ton of rust in them.
390 in a 67 galaxie. Freeze plugs started leaking, popped them out and there was a ton of rust.
390 in a 75 f250. Hadn't run much at all between 91 and now. Tons of rust in lower passages.
460 for f250. Bought it in a supposedly rebuilt, low mile condition. I did hear it run. Then it sat for 6 years until now. I just popped the freeze plugs out and it was absolutely packed with rust and nastly black fluid.

I have a non-Ford motor that has rusted out a plug in a head!
Yes others in the block also leaked and it would over heat in no time and it only had 60k on the motor.
Yes it is full of rust and why the plugs leaked.
Buddy also had a non-Ford run hot because of rust sitting in the bottom of the block.
To the OP was this when driving it ran hot and if you stopped it cooled down some?
Lower radiator hose have a spring in it?
New hoses do not come with springs now so you have to reuse the spring from the old hose.
The spring keeps the hose from being sucked closed and stopping flow as it is on the suction side of the pump.

A radiator shop owner explained to me that what looks like rust is actually casting mud being released from the pores in the cast iron. If you rub it between your fingers it feels slimy. When the engines are cast they are treated with a sealer which breaks down over time and the mud starts leaching out. The only cure is to knock out all the plugs and try to hose out as much as possible.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I tried a heat gun on the thermostat housing today - but for some reason my gun would not work.
Perhaps I will do a radiator flush.
