Haven't tried much today as far as the engine. Set the valves, tried taking the fan off. No appreciable difference in vibration. It would probably help if I did a better carb tune. I need to get a vacuum gauge, it's all been done by ear, including timing. No timing marks to be found. Someone at some point had lost the distributor hold down and bolt and had decided a ratchet strap was the best course of action to remedy that. That was the first thing I tackled when I got it home. It was interesting to say the least.
Set the valves on the passenger side. Good news, but mostly bad. The good, I can confidently say that the smoking is more than likely from the valve seals, or lack there of. Only one valve had a seal on it and it was up against the spring retainer. The bad, the amount of foliage that was in there. And no unfortunately that's not code for anything. Few leaves, twigs, some blades of grass, foxtails. I'm really questioning the condition of this motor now. It runs seemingly well, decent power for what it is. Has the odd vibration/shake going. Makes very good oil pressure. Part of me wants to drop the pan and go through the filter. Part of me also says just change the oil and the engine dies when it dies. Should I just plan on rebuilding it now? Am I overreacting?
Decided to go and pull the heads. Got the passenger side off. Interesting what I found. First thing I noticed is that the exhaust valve stems are larger than the intake. I've read that those were only on the 292 HD version, so I thought that was a plus. They are missing the caps though, which explains why the rockers were pushing on the spring retainers. Rockers need to be ground. Also had a bent push rod. It is not, however, a 292 as a handful of people have said. It's a 272 that's been bored 30 over. Not the end of the world other than one cylinder has some gouges so this block might not have enough left to clean up. Not sure how far you can bore these. I'll have to do some more research on the valve train on 292 vs 272. Also finally found the timing marks on the damper. They are nowhere near tdc so that could be the cause of the shake.

272 can be bored a lot. Like .125 should be achievable. I have A 272 .060 currently
That's comforting to know. Now to find the valve caps. Nothing is showing up online so far. I'll keep going on the valve job and hopefully something shows up.

That would be amazing. The stems are .432. I have confirmed the heads to be the 292 HD/industrial low compression.
I'm also not sure how umbrella seals work, but the few that are there and snug on the stems and are about a 1/4" larger than the guides. I'm going to see if I can find something that might work better.
If you can find a parts motor while you have yours apart it will come in very handy once you find something broken (It is Inevitable).
Parts trucks or engines are great to have as when you need a hard component you can just go pull one off the parts rig instead of traveling and buying one which takes much more time.
I have 2 parts trucks for my 1965 c10 and they are super handy for parts as my truck was stored since 81 with 2-3 tons of scarp in the bed and everything is bent or broken on the suspension.
I found someone on Facebook marketplace selling 2 engines. Says they're both 292. One is compete minus a carb, the other has no heads or intake. I'm going to go look at them this coming weekend. I'm abandoning the heads I have for the foreseeable future. Hopefully the heads on this other motor one are non industrial. I'll make sure to pull the valve cover and check.
Well the one with no heads I can't imagine turning at all. The one with heads may. I'm not too concerned about that at the moment but I may try while I'm there.
For some reason i thought that they were stored indoors.
If the motor with heads wont turn then the rust could have pitted up the combustion chamber in the head rendering the heads unusable.
