I put that little spare on my wife's 01 Taurus today - first time on the ground. She drove six miles and it went flat and the rim bent. What a piece of crap! I'll be calling the dealer tomorrow to bend his ear. I'd gladly give up a few cubic inches for a real tire and rim. Vent complete.
Dono
When I worked at Costco, (tire dept.) we sort of "actively" tried to sell our customers full sized spare tires. For reasons everyone knows. Money for Costco, safety for the customer. Most people didn't see it that way though. Then they wonder why their car is hard to handle at speeds above 50 on the little donut.
i don't care why they are used, they should be illegal...
My girlfriend had one in her Mustang. almost killed her...
the thing exploded going 35 one the way home... about 15 miles
They need care just like any other tire, like checking the pressure. They also need replacing after use. They are only good for a few miles. They will explode just like any other tire if run on low pressure.
The space saver tires are suppose to be inflated to 60 psi. Very rarely are they ever inflated that high, plus, they sit in the trunk collecting water and dry rotting for years before people use them.
You see people put that shiny stuff all over their tires, but, never pop the trunk and check the sidewalls and air pressure on their spare. I do not know how many people I have changed tires for at the side of the road that had almost flat donut tires. Luckily I keep a compressor in all my vehicles.
I have driven numerous miles on the little spare without any trouble on my taurus. When I was in high school, we used to put the spare on my buddies cavalier so it would spin tire. That spare lasted a long time before it blew out.
I had one in the wife's Altima for a few years, the "cover" would sit about 2.5" above the trunk floor. I put the space saver back in, because if we got a flat, I'd have it taken care of immediately (I know....What if...3 in the morning..........)
Space saver tire? hmm..all my vehicles have had a full size spare, in one of my cars, I kept a full set of rims and tires.....yes a full set in the back seat....I needed ALL of them when it got wrecked....oh well..
I do try and regularly check my spare in my truck, take it down, clean it up...check pressure.
I had to put a mini on my Gran Marquis one day, looked like a harpooned whale the way it leaned on the little thing. Next day a full size went in the truck. Will a full size tire fit in the tire well of a 99 Taurus? Looks like it won't.
