Odd head gasket

I'm starting to tear down my 6.0 for a rebuild and these head gaskets don't look right. What's with the coolant passages being 90% blocked with only a 1/8 inch hole? I've only pulled the passenger side so far.

Never mind. I see it's normal from looking at new head gaskets.

The flow orifices are sized during engine development to optimize the coolant flow at the time. But primarily, those locations remove air from the top of the engine block coolant jacket.

However, if you look at the 6.0L big brother, the 6.4L lower channels were changed to a much larger opening at the middle cylinders. While that lowers some volume out of the back of the block into the back of the heads for the cross-flow, it gives more cooling capacity at those middle cylinder exhaust ports. Would the 6.0L have benefitted from that? You'd spend about a million dollars in testing to know.

It appears you had a little bit of combustion gas carbon escaping into the water jacket, but it is not abnormal for this engine, and you didn't have the gaskets fail on this head in the center weak point between the cylinders. It would be interesting to know if any out-of-flat is across the head's width.

Were the head gaskets blown on this engine, or are you just changing them?

Thanks for the informative response! I'll be checking the head and block surface at some point in the future and I'll let you know.

P.S. Really enjoy learning from your YT videos

I bought this truck a month ago from a local pump shop. The truck itself is in pretty bad shape but I plan on putting the engine and transmission in my Excursion. It's been sitting for 3 years and they told me that pistons 2 and 5 had holes in them. I just got done pulling the heads and all pistons look fine. I just towed it home and got to work on pulling it apart since that was my plan from the start. It was a nice surprise to see it was already studded and had a Bullet proof EGR cooler

Glad they helped.

They might have read low compression if the valves did seat correctly, either due to blocking the seating or if they let the truck sit for long, the valve guides rusting up and the action lazy, even if there are no witness marks on the pistons. Just a guess, but that would be a great deal then. How many miles were on the chassis?

The odometer showed 214,000 miles. I'll post pictures of the cylinders and heads.
