4x4 Hub

I would like to remove and refinish the silver ring in the pic below. Is it simply a matter or removing the 3 screws and taking it off, or are there internal components that will come out with/attached to it? Will fluid leak out? Do I need to replace a seal when reassembling?

Any tips and advice appreciated.

It's just grease in there. No leaks.

A-Rod has a video on how to remove/replace the hubs.

my practice is to lock the hubs once a month a drive about 10 miles unless I am using the 4x4 during the month.

So I decided to get to it today rather than wait.

Old paint sanded down and cleaned up

This hub was easy to turn

This one was harder to turn due to minor corrosion inside

Ready for primer and paint

Finished product!

So the hub comes out easy enough and seems like there was some sort of thin plastic gasket where it mate's to the axle. This plastic doesn't seal well and allowed some minor corrosion to start behind the hub. The gear teeth themselves have grease on them and were still in excellent condition. On reassembly I decided to put a very thin smear of rtv silicone in place of the "gasket" to help keep moisture out.

The hardest part was separating the outer ***** from the inner gears of the hub... Wasn't actually hard, just took a few extra minutes to release all the fingers holding them together.

OK, enough rambling.

Cheers.

nice job. so should not need to do anything of this nature again for several thousand miles unless you submerge the hubs.

turn them occasionally, I recommend once a month and drive for a few miles.
