Mule's e40d died!

Its probably been almost ten years since I stopped using the Mule for towing my 5er and got the Mare (caught on fire) then the OX which I'm still towing with. The Mule has been used for hauling water for only 1K miles a year. Well today it made its last trip getting water because the trans is slipping badly. A few years ago I got my Dad's old 80 F250 running and I'm thinking about using it for water duty. The tires on the Mule are in great shape, will they bolt up on the 80 F250? The 80 are 16.5 rims and the Mule is 16 but is the bolt pattern the same?

The Mule is a 96 F250 E40D 2wd psd.

Good to know Ben, thanks. Not sure what I'm going to do with the Mule? I'll take my time looking around for a 'cheap' e40d I guess. In this post https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-the-dead.html is the 80 that I think can handle the water duty but not sure if I can fill the 450 gallon tank all the way up like I do with the Mule. The little 302 will struggle with the hills but it will make it OK I think.

We just were blabbin about reman E4ODs here. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post20967486

302s are pretty gutless. My 88 has one. Small camshaft, maybe alu intake, good exhaust should help it breathe far better.

Thanks Eric, While I'm in AZ this winter I'll look around for a e40d.

That sucks the mule is dying. That is a lot of weight for that old pickup. I'd throw some air bags at it and go for it if it's running good. It may be a slower trip but it will get you there.

I don't think my old 84 302 could pull that very far .I guess what rear end and gearing you have.

I've nursed that trans for a long time now but its done for, needs a rebuilt e40d. I tried the Lucas oil for slipping trans, no workey! At full tank of 450 gallons that would be 3,700 pounds but I don't have to fill it to the top.

Its axle is a C7 = Dana 60 - Limited Slip - Capacity 5300 - Ratio 3.54 is what I found.

Will a 7.3 idi e40d fit and work OK? The seller says so but I was also told the TC would have to be changed. Will my PCM handle it? Includes a BD deep sump pan, filter kit, moroso 1 piece gasket, ATS dip stick repair tube before engine failure but was never installed. Also comes with a banks transcommander that’s less than 6 months old with roughly 500 miles on it and a mishimoto 6.0 trans cooler. Also comes with a 7.3idi flex plate. Truck has 161K on it but seller said its been rebuilt sometime in the past but doesn't know how many miles on the rebuild, shifts fine he says. He has gone with a manuel. Anybody have an opinion if 1K$ would be a reasonable gamble?

yes the IDI trans will work, but you will have to use a powerstroke torque converter. IDI is 4 bolt converter, powerstroke is 6 bolts to flex plate.
i did the same swap two years ago on a 95. trans came out of a 92 or 93 IDI
