I realize this may have been asked before, unfortunately don't have the time to go through everything.
I have a 1988 F150 Lariat longbed. The steering walks (not sure how else to describe it). The play in the wheel is about 2-2.5 inches. I have checked the connection to the gear box, and it looks tight. All bushings look new and are nicely tight. Once it engages, it turns fine, but the wheels seem to stay turned until I turn back. Any Ideas? Time for a new gearbox?
That happens when someone plays with the steering box adjustment screw, in an attempt to remove slop from the system.
Loosen up the adjustment screw and see if the steering will center itself.
That is too much play before anything happens. Start looking it over for worn/ loose components. The not returning to center could be in the steering gear or it would also be bad ball joints.
