I've taken my rear axle off my 68 and was looking at the differential and pinion gears. First time I've done anything like this and was wondering how can I get the gears to rotate so I can see what kind of shape they are in? I know if everything was connected to the truck it would have to be in neutral. So now what do I do? TIA.
Turn the pinion, and it should turn the ring gear so you can see every tooth on both. Look for any chipped tooth, or scratches on the tooth surfaces.
If it's an open diff, you can hold one of the axle shafts steady while turning the pinion, and listen for the differential action in the spider and side gears in the differential housing. There may be the slightest grinding noise as you do this, as they are straight cut bevel gears, and don't mesh perfectly.
If it's a limited slip, you would have to hold one side steady and apply some torque to the pinion to overcome the clutches to get the differentiation.
