It would be a good idea for any factory order, actually. Many buyers, especially over the past 3 years, have had their vehicle produced but no trucks to get it to the dealers. There were also issues with rail shipping a while back.
I've always thought it was nice to have the option to drive your Corvette off the assembly line.
I don't think the program for the Corvette allows you to drive your car off the assembly line. From what I have read, you are not picking up your car from the factory. You are taking delivery from the Corvette Museum which is adjacent to the factory. It is a $1500 option that must be selected at the time of ordering and the Museum must be specified as the delivery location.

And to make matters worse, if you do museum delivery you must also pay the standard transportation fee.
I would 100% take up a pick up your truck from the plant option.
Also with all the tech in them, ford could easily add some break in software that would pop up and say slow down now, speed up now if speeds where maintained for to long furring the break in period.
Beyond that, There are tons of Hotshots who will transport a vehicle from Portland to NH for like $1k... or at least there used to be. I am sure we would get a group of guys who would do it regularly for a deal.

Yes, the museum, not the plant specifically. Thanks.

Double whammy, especially as you drive it home yourself. Unless you live in Bowling Green, of course. That'd really suck.
I would love to be able to pick my truck from the factory. Right now I’ll be picking up my truck at granger and immediately will be driving it 1100 miles. I will for the most part stay off interstates and drive the back roads. Just gonna take my time getting it home.
I've driven every vehicle I've ever bought, be it car, truck, snowmobile, ATV or motorcycle just the way I was going to use it every day right from Day 1. No ill effects on any of them ever.
But with that being said I still wouldn't want a stranger putting those first thousand miles on my new truck.
Me either. Those people are paid a flat rate to get the vehicle delivered. No thanks.
Considering insurance issues, I'd imagine that the end owner, of any new vehicle, couldn't pick up their own vehicle at the factory and drive it home until it was paid for, and the title transferred to said owner/lien holder. That's why the Corvette process is set up as it is.

Everything except handing over the keys can be done online now. No reason why Insurance, Financing can't be done ahead of time. Trade ins would have to be worked out somehow.

I don't see any different than picking up at a dealer.
I'd love to be able to pick up my own truck from Ford. I can get there in 6hrs. I had to wait 6 weeks for my 2018 to get shipped after it was built.
My father was in the car sales industry back when I was growing up, 60s and 70s. Customer pick up at the factory used to be an option. Not sure why they went away from that.
