Correct,
The sector shaft adjustment will not solve for loose parts

Bump

Just a bump here. Does anyone on the forum know how to tighten/loosen the bolt on the steering box? I'm not looking for advice on if I should, but how to perform the adjustment. None of the videos actually show it. I have an effectively disabled vehicle until I find a source of information on this. The dealership in town doesn't work on vehicles before 2010.

The adjustment procedure has been described to you several times.

here’s a video. It’s got a nut on it and on the screw there’s a flathead on the top. If you don’t see one it has one clean it until you see the flathead. unless it’s been changed then I dont know.
This is temporary if there was play in it, it’s worn it NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. It’s not properly fixing it adjusting it it’s a band aid. I have play in my wheel I just deal with it because I don’t prioritize it. It was annoying at first but now I don’t notice it. So to be honest you’re always gonna have problems with that steering box now. It’s worn you can’t fix it. Get it rebuilt, or get a new one.

I don't think so. I just re-read this thread and I don't see it anywhere. Unless you mean somewhere else? Do you have a link?

Not a magic bullet & not rocket science.

My process:

Flat head screwdriver & box wrench. Place screwdriver in slot. Hold fast. Break nut & swing wrench counterclockwise 90*

If screw driver moved, turn clockwise to original position that you thoughtfully pre-marked.

Turn screwdriver 45*, or quarter turn clockwise. Tighten nut without moving screwdriver. Done. NO MORE
this is the description of how to do it

So I know I said all this before but just to make sure it's in one place:

> here’s a video.

I've seen that video, thank you. That's the one that got me into this mess.

> It’s got a nut on it and on the screw there’s a flatheahere’s a video.d on the top.

No there isn't.

> If you don’t see one it has one clean it until you see the flathead.

I've got it down to bare metal. There is no flathead.

> unless it’s been changed then I dont know.

Right, all of this has been established already. I'm asking the people who do know to please help.

> This is temporary if there was play in it, it’s worn it NEEDS TO BE REPLACED

Roger Wilco. Again.

As I've been saying, there is no slot in the screw. And removing the nut caused the screw to turn with it (on and then off) and this is what I'm trying to fix.

Haven't done the video.

Yes/no. There is/is not a nut with a bolt through it that has a slot in it & no head as shown in post # 10 on the top of your steering box?

(Edit) well then yes, you need to cut a slot.

Is it broken off smooth which seems impossible?

Can you clean this off & take a picture?

Make your own flathead mark then, I’ve done that on a stripped screw. It was cheap aluminum though so I could just hit the screwdriver into it and it made the mark enough to remove the screw. Use a Dremel or something, post a picture of the nut and screw maybe someone can give their input on it. If there’s no way to adjust the screw, then you can’t adjust it without modifying it.

Yes, it might come to that. I'm still hoping that someone will provide the answer. As in - there are some of these steering boxes where the adjustment is made differently, and someone will explain the trick.

In post 10 I stated how I do it and included the procedure from the Ford service manual. Post 15 also has how it is done.

See above posts. No. As shown in post 10, every steering gear is supposed to have a slot in the preload adjustment screw. It is entirely possible someone has broken the screw. Post a picture of what you are seeing.

I just did this adjustment on my 87 F150. Breaking that nut loose was a bear. Marked the position of the adjuster screw and tightened it 1/4 turn. re-tightened the nut. better now.
