Fuel issue
I took it on its first long voyage, aprox 250 kms over two days, no issues ran real smooth at 65 mph on the highway.
Parked when I got home (its a rarely driver). About a week later I noticed a leak and it looked like it was under the power steering pump. Due to life, it wasn't a job I was going to get to anytime soon, but about 6 weeks after parking I needed to move the truck but it wouldn't start. Killed and charged the battery 3 times with it only turning over.
I disconnected fuel line at the carb and put it into a bottle and cranked with very little fuel collecting in the bottle.
From there I put a little gas directly into the carb and when cranked it sputtered and tried to start. Tried again and same result.
So I put a fair amount of gas in the carb and it fired right up, and as I hit the gas it kept running and ran great after. Fired up again the next day no issue. A couple weeks later the same issue occurred.
The fuel pump, sending unit and tank are all new, under 300km
My next plan was to replace the fuel line from the fuel pump to the carb as I am wondering if there is a leak that is being masked by the PS pump leak as they are in the same area.
I thought I would get some opinions here first in case there is a different direction I should be looking at. Eccentric maybe?
Appreciate any advice as it looks like I can get some time on it this weekend.
Thanks
So the pump is new but so you know it still could be bad and not pulling fuel but we can test this.
Have you replaced ALL the RUBBER HOSES?
You have one at the tank(s) sending units to the metal line that run along the frame.
Then you have one from that same metal line to the fuel pump.
If you have more then 1 tank check the lines to it and any valve for rubber hose and replace as needed.
I have seen a small crack in the hose by the tank suck in air when under heavy load but was ok the rest of the time.
It also did not leak when the car was not running.
So replace the hoses and see what happens.
Now to test the pump if the hoses have been replaced and it still does not pull from the tank(s) get a long hose to reach the pump inlet and a gan can set on the fender well or maybe under the truck. See if the pump will pull fuel then and if not then the pump may be bad out of the box.
The other thing I had happen on my 81 F100 with a 300 six and pump not pulling fuel from a gas can I used the wrong size hose.
In my case my truck uses 5/16 hose and I used 3/8 and even with 2 clamps on the hose it still would not pull fuel from the gas can.
That is how I would go about checking this out.
