I need some serious help. My work truck is an 02 psd. I developed a vibration that feels like it is in the seat of your pants. My tires( goodyear mtr ) were getting worn so i bought a new set of the same and had the front end alighned. No change. It shackes some at 40 but at 70 is shackes pretty bad. Bad enough to loosen screws in the cab of the truck. I went back to the place where i purchused the tires and the found tha on the inside of the back tire was worn down to a quarter inch but the out side is a half inch. So I asked them to see if the wheel is bent and they told me that it is not.
I need to find out what the problem is because i put about 50,000 mile a year on the truck and it is shackeing me to death. Thanks in advance.
jack up the rear, put on GOOD jackstands, run it up to about 40-50 indicated on the speedo, and see if you have a vibration, if you do, pull off the rear tires and see if it still SHAKES. if it does not, tires/wheels. if you get no vibration at all on stands, problem is likely the front.
if no vibe in the rear, you can also rotate the tires to the rear and try again, although ANY competant tire shop can spin balance all four wheels to see if your problem is in the wheels/tires...
this will help determine if it is a driveline prob, but only if it is in the rear...
if it is a 4x4...alot more hassle. 4 jackstands.
Since i dont feel the shacke in the stirring whell, does that mean the problem isnt in the front end? Also could it be a bad u joint in the rear of the drive shaft? I havent heard any popping or felt any slack but i have heard that a u joint can get rusted and get sticky and not want to rotate properly. Does that sound like a likely place to look aswell? thanks
My 99' F-350, had a bad U-Joint at the rear end, I took the hole driveshaft to a driveshaft shop, and had them replace the U-joints plus they checked the center carrier bearing, and also checked the spline set-up for ecess wear,,was OK, they balanced the shaft, I re-greased the spline before re-installing it,
By the way,,it did have a pretty Bad vibration before all this, and found play in the U-joint first,,!
