Corrosion on battery?

I have a ton of corrosion on my battery It is so bad in fact that I am unable to loosen the bolt to get it off. My question is, what is the process to get it off and how does this problem begin?
I have heard several ways to get it off but unsure about them
1.) any type of carbonated drink
2.) baking soda

I would try cutting or breaking the bolt, should be easy if you have that much corrosion. Don't flex the battery post when you do this. Regular cleaning with a post cleaner is the best, you can use baking soda but don't get any in the battery, it will neutralize the battery acid.

When you are finished cleaning every thing up, give every thing a liberal coating of di-electric silicone compound(tune-up silicone). If you buy the big tube of silicone, you can lube the door gaskets and weather strips. It takes about 10 minutes per door. You have to rob it in real good. Let it soak in overnight then wipe off the excess.
