I have a 1999 it has 576k miles on it. It started yesterday when I was picking up my kids from school it was stop and go traffic. The truck stalled out and the engine shut off when I let off the accelerator. Also does the same thing on an incline when I let my foot off the accelerator and if the truck rolls back and push down on the accelerator to go it shuts down. It just started doing this, could it be cause it has so many miles? Or can it be fixed? Has anyone else had this problem.
Lots of different possible causes for this. Most likely, judging from your description of symptoms, in my opinion is the high pressure oil solinoid is sticking. It's mounted off the bottom of the high pressure oil pump which is mounted below the fuel filter housing. Don't trust Amazoo parts. Only Motorcraft for this one.
But please don't take my word for it. The parts cannon can get expensive. Need to do some proper testing to verify.
At the top of the forum is a crash course in reading up on how to diagnose and repair these vehicles. Required reading if you want to be proficient at it.
It does sound like an IPR. But there are other things to check as well.
Only buy a motorcraft IPR from a trusted source. Amazon/eBay and the like are not considered trusted. Too many fakes. CNCFab, Riffraff, or the dealer would be trusted in my opinion.
How’s the oil level? The injectors work off of oil pressure so low oil can cause running issues. Doesn’t sound like your problem but free to check.
How’s the fuel level? It can start sucking air near 1/4 tank if there’s issues with the in tank pickup.
You could try with the ICP (drivers side head in front) disconnected to just get a reference point. It reads the pressure and the IPR adjusts it. It will run off default tables if ICP disconnected. Again, free to try.
Best option is to get a OBD dongle and FORScan to log some data for ICP.
Well the nut did back off and IPR thanks every one for the help.
Good to hear you found the problem.
Have you ever changed out the low pressure/lube oil pump? With so many miles that would be my very next upgrade. I think I would replace every 300k even if you had already replaced. Melling made an updated design that blows the stock pump out of the water, makes everything on the engine perform better. Keep her running!
