Question for the Group

I have a 2021 6.7 F350 Super Duty. Truck has around 12500 miles on it. Tuesday I was pulling my Outdoors RV travel Trailer down a steep forest service road after camping a few days. I had the transmission in manual & the engine brake engaged going down the steep road. Two - 3 miles down all of a sudden the dash flashed "reduced engine power" since I was headed down hill I really wasn't using much power. I noticed the engine would hardly rap up. I got to a wide spot & pulled over I thought to myself what am I going to do. I have a 10,000 lb RV on the back. No way would the truck pull it in this mode. I put the transmission in neutral & hardly any throttle response.
So, I shut the truck off ,waited a minute, started it back up. Got down to the main HWY (160) all power back to normal. 35 miles down the HWY not a problem.
Any ideas why this truck did this?
The def tank is over half full. That is the only reason that I can think that it would go to reduced power. Just a hiccup or do I need to investigate this further before I get left stranded.

Thanks,
Russ

You might have over revved the engine having the transmission in manual mode.

Check engine light?
Need to scan for codes, even if the light is not on there would be stored codes.

Any check engine light or stored error codes?

Also, don’t assume it is specifically an engine issue. Other things can cause reduced power, like maybe an unhappy transmission.

How much fuel in the tank? Was the hill steep enough you might have starved the pump of fuel?

Well, I know that I did not over rap the motor, not even close. Even in manual it should shift up in case of a over rap. The fuel tank was 3/4 full. The def tank a little over half full. I believe as I was coming down the road I was shifting from 1st, 2nd & 3rd & might have done it a little too quickly back & forth. And confused the transmission. As I stated as soon as I shut the motor off & restarted it. It has been perfect like it has been all along. Went today & topped off the fuel & took it on a 35 mile drive & it behaved perfect. At this point I'm guessing that this is what happened.
Thanks,
Russ

There will be a DTC stored that will indicate what led to the restricted power mode. The chain autoparts stores offer free code reading and their scanners can pick up the DTC.

I wouldn't be alarmed as electrical hiccups are pretty common with the diesels and the old shutdown/restart practice gets you going again. I see it often enough amongst my customers and the next time the truck is in for service I run the history and usually find a coolant or emissions related sensor didn't report back in time and the computer tripped a fault sending it into limp mode.
