Red face Shroud Rehab...........

Can it be rehabbed .......

Dave Kindig quality ~~~
Ok , Trying a rehab to orginal fan shroud that has damage ...
Not going for looks cuz this will just be used temporarily if it comes out Ok , cuz repair is not the best I could do , just need it quickly & spur of the moment throwing stuff at it.........
I need opinions if opening is big enough/safe enough because it got out of square after a great start , but oh well.............I glued parts with wood glue & may not hold , but I plan to add a great metal piece or two soon that should be very secure . If fan does not rub
It is 19-!/2 " wide , but only 18-5/16" high , which only leaves me 1-1/16" of space ( -5/16" each side ) because fan is 17-1/2" wide ..........
Just noticed my math is wrong........... I have a hair more than a 1/2" on each side.........yes.........
Anyway , it was kinda fun doing this today actually , & I think it may just work ...
When I take clamps off it may move a little bigger ... which would be Kool.........
Ya'll think +1/2"+ is enough space from the fan ? closer to the radiator side it gets much bigger very quickly , so I have faith it will work..........
Engine is 190* most of the time , I think shroud will bring it down to 180* which would be perfect to me..........

Finding a new shroud is way easier than band aiding the old one. 180 is a pipe dream for Ford motors of this era. They like to run hot, 190-210. Keep the oil good and all is well.

When you have time and dont have money then there is nothing wrong with the way he is fixing this.
I would have done it the same way.

Only thing I would do is keep an eye on it.
The pop rivets have small area heads to grab with.
A small flat washer put on the pop rivet on the plastic shroud side would give it more area to grab.
The other side has the metal plate so that should be ok.
Or could put metal on both sides so the rivet goes thru metal / shroud / metal.

RTT,
You have given me some inspiration. I have a 1967 F100 and that year did not have a shroud. I think I will find a shroud from another year and make modifications to suit. My concern is not the cooling but rather the safety factor when working under the hood with the engine running.

There is a guy on YouTube that makes shrouds for race cars out of metal that you should be able to make.

Yeah Christmas , this is a big reason why I did this quick temporary repair , it was just a matter of time before I got my han in the fan..........ha...........
Surprized I have not hit fan already ...
I bet if you look at Carpenters catalog carefully & take the measurements of your radiator you can find a shroud that will work . There are lots of shrouds to pick from . There are lots of measurements to go by to get the right one !!!
I would like to know if your radiator has holes for a shroud ???

Looks like I have to take fan off to install shroud !!!
Ya'll think 1/2 " is enough space between fan & shroud ?

No holes for a shroud. I can't be positive but I think the rad is original, and the 67's didn't have a shroud, so no holes present.

With a shroud the rule of thumb is having the fan halfway out the back as to not create turbulence. Nothing to do with radiator to fan spacing.

1/2" is what I would try as a start.
Then again you have part of the old shroud if you bolt than in place and measure what do you have?

I am being extra careful because I have learned that things do not always turn out like you THINK they should .
I measured the fan , it is 17 .5 inches . I believe factory spacing is around 19.5" for the opening of the fan shroud . My homemade repair is off an inch one way , so I ask you experts....... your opinions/help .
I am gonna go for it an install it today , just looks like I have to take off the fan & was not expecting that or want to , but oh well..............
Thank -you all...........

Sometimes with a fan that close it is easier to pull the radiator, slide the shroud over the fan and reinstall the radiator. This way will save your knuckles and the radiator.

I think he is talking about the tips of the blades to the shroud.
Tbear in another area had the same fan measurements, 17.5 and shroud opening, 19 and I think that would be good as long as your motor mounts are in good shape.

As for getting the shroud on & off there can be 2 ways to do this.
1 as said pull the radiator put shroud over fan then radiator back in.
2 remove the fan and spacer, slip the shroud in place and fit the fan & spacer back on then shroud.
This way you may not have room to get the fan bolts out and you may hurt the radiator with tools / bolts hitting it and then it leaks.
A large piece of card bard covering the radiator helps protect it.

There was mention of "is 1/2 inch to close".
