Hey guys, I've been searching the forums and can't find an answer I'm replacing the glow plugs in my 1986 F250 with the 6.9idi. I've replaced 7 of the 8 glow plugs but the last one just spins, It doesn't unthread at all so there are no threads showing, I've sprayed it with PB blaster several times, i have tried gripping it with various tools like pliers and vice grips and can't get it to come out at all. I'm afraid of breaking it cause I really don't want to take the heads off but all it does is spin in place. Has anyone encountered this before? is there is any way to remove it? I should note that the GP in question is for cylinder 7
An update on my issue if anyone can help, it turns out the nut on the top of the casing ripped off the rest of the casing, so thats why it was just spinning, now my new problem is that the glowplug and the threaded part of the casing are still in the cylinder head, can I just pull the glow thing out of the casing? or do I need to find a way to get the casing to unthread? still would really rather not pull the heads, Thanks!
Can you grab the remains of the GP with needle nose vise grips? If so, give that a try.
I've also heard you can force the remains of a GP out of the pre-chamber by cranking the engine with the 12V disconnected from the FSS on the injection pump.
Ouch, thats not so good. If I understand what you are saying, you got the 'nut' part off, but the threads are still threaded in place, and the rest of the glow plug is stuck in there as well? So the 'nut' broke off the threads?
If so, there really isn't going to be an easy way to get that out. The part that glows is crimped to the bottom of the threaded part, so you won't be able to just pull it out. Possibly could snap or cut some of that off, then drill it out for an EZ-out, but the remainder of the plug might drop into the prechamber doing that.
I'm thinking the best thing to do, is leave it there. Replace the rest, and either reconnect the wire to that one, or tape it off real good so it can't short out to anything. Then just run it with 7 glow plugs. It won't be ideal, but unless you're in a really cold place it should start ok.
Thanks for the responses! I can grab it with some vice grips but it's to cramped to get good leverage to pull on it, unfortunately I live in Utah so it does get pretty cold here in the winter time. Could I run the truck in really cold temperature or should I suck it up and just take the heads off?
After a minute or two, it will warm up from friction and fire up fine on 7 for a bit of shaking.
block heater for them colder nights for 30 minutes helps a lot too. I have a light switch in the house wired to lamp post with an outlet.
