Desalting the rig

So the rig and me unfortunately ended up driving several miles through pure saltwater sometimes over a foot and a half deep. Have been cleaning daily and applying salt away. Any tips from the guys up north what else I can try? Also considering a light fluid film coat underneath long term. As I’m sure hitting the boat ramp doesn’t help either over time. Thanks for the help

Fluid Film to the Rescue.
spray it on everything underneath,
open the doors and spray it up inside all of the openings,
in short, spray on everything except paint.

under the hood, spray it on electrical connectors, especially the battery, hinges, springs

Whenever we travel up north during the winter or season when they are applying "road cancer" to the roads, we ALWAYS do a really good rinse on the vehicles. We use a hose at the house and rinse everywhere we possibly can to include the door jambs and drains, under the hood and undercarriage. Then, we take the vehicle to a self service car wash that has an undercarriage wash and drive over it very slowly to give it a good rinse. There are attachments that you can purchase or build for a pressure washer that are rolling sprayers that wash the undercarriage.

If this is going to be a common occurrence, definitely invest in some sort of coating or rust preventative. If this is once in a few years or not very often thing, just rinse it really well and things will be fine, at least in my experience.

There’s a bit of rust on the truck already so things really speed up around salt. Also at the beach house it’s an uphill road from the boat ramp so there’s a ton of salt on the road 24/7. Probably going to bed line the truck and then swap the body down the road.

I’d say first step is removing the salt that’s already there. Every nook and cranny. 🫤 I wouldn’t put any type of coating on until you feel the salt is gone, otherwise you’d just be sealing it in.

Like Sous said, spray underneath well and maybe a car wash with and undercarriage sprayer. The wheel wells are difficult to clean. They have like a double panel or something. I try to get from every angle. Of course your situation doesn’t sound the same as driving in the salted mist from northern roads which gets everywhere.

Watch the body mounts and such where the dirt likes to collect and then prevent things from draining out.

I have sprayed inside the door panels with oil. More recently I used a protectant similar to Wool Wax (lanolin oil) under the truck. It’s messy but I hope it helps protect from the elements. Ultimately I do my very best to keep the truck in the garage and off the salted roads in winter which means snow tires for my little commuter car. I know that doesn’t help you in your situation though.

After a day at mudfest, we slid a lawn sprinkler up under the truck.
