96 7.3 fuel issue
Within about the last 3 weeks there was a couple of times I lost power and it was running very rough, but after about 5 minutes it cleared up and was fine. Today it did it again, but died this time.
While fooling around with it on the side of the road I did notice when pushing the Schrader valve in on the side of the fuel bowl that nothing came out, so it appears it's not getting fuel.
After getting it towed home, and what I felt like was a high towing bill, me and a neighbor fooled with it for about 10 minutes and it fired back up.
All we really did was remove the fuel filter to see if it was filling up, didn't seem to at first then suddenly started filling.
Put the filter back in, wound on the starter a little and it finally fired up, running perfectly fine again.
I did replace the fuel filter, but really doubt that's the problem.
Anyone got any ideas what else it might be and what maybe I could do to get it started in case it leaves me stranded again? One tow bill is enough for now.
Thanks
I know this doesn't necessarily mean anything, but I replaced the fuel pump 3 or 4 months ago because it was pouring fuel. Just because it's new, doesn't mean it's good.
Broken or clogged pickup in tank?
Have you removed the fuel cap, removed the fuel pump feed line and back blown the line to the tank?
The real fix for this is drop the tank and fix stuff if it is a pickup issue. See Hutch/ Harpoon Mod.
I'm on the front tank right now and it was around a half a tank when that happened today.

Weird thing, I know it was around a half a tank when it quit, but after dropping off the rollback it showed less than a quarter, I put a gallon or two in and didn't put the cap back on.
It started showing half a tank again after it started.
I knew about the quarter tank rule if the shower head was broke off and I'm certain I was well above that the last 2 times it ran bad.
I didn't blow back thru the line. If it happens again, I'll try that.

So, I'm going to try to keep a little extra fuel in the rear tank and hope that Mickey Mouse patch holds until next week. I just don't have the time right now to deal with the issue.
That tank was full when it started leaking. Put a screw in the hole and used that gas tank repair kit., crossing my fingers.

I guess the screens could be a possibility.
I went ahead and filled the front tank this morning, put $15 in the rear for an emergency reserve. So far the patch is holding, only slightly damp in that area.
I've been about 45 miles this morning a lot of that running 65-70mph and so far no issues. Just hope I can get through until sometime next week. I still won't have the time, but I'll have to make time then.
Guess I should go ahead and get a kit to pull that apart and check screens.

The only thing I've done is run with my cap loose.
I've had no chance to change anything, but there was one time I must not have had the cap loose enough and when I refueled there was a lot of air either coming in the tank or going out of.
I suspect it was going in. I'm suspecting my vent is clogged and it caused a vacuum to build keeping it from pumping fuel, does this sound reasonable to you?
Oh, I'm kind of dismissing the fuel valve since it hasn't been used in a couple of months.
