starter issues

Hi, I just rebuilt my 390 from my f350. The question I have is this, When I turn my starter key to the run position the engine starts and runs without having to go all the way to the right or the start position. I've used the hot wire that used to go to the coil to wire my HEI distributor. The wire had a full 12+ volts with the key on, so I thought it would be a good choice to connect to the bat terminal of the distributor. Is this normal with an HEI distributor or do I have something else in the starter circuit wired wrong? Thank you for your help.

MartyJB,

Maybe I am misunderstanding your note ? But I cannot see how you would have the engine start and run in the same key position ? Wouldn't the starter still be engaged if that key position starts the truck ?
