2001 e350, 5.4, rear AC.
I just bought this van, they said AC don't work. I added some freon but ac didn't get colder. I evacuated system, added freon and ac would only cool if I was going at highway speed. I checked the condenser and the fins were smashed pretty good. So I replaced the condenser, evacuated system, then added 4 cans of freon. That got AC down to 78°. 48oz, specs say 64oz. I add one more can (now 56oz) and no change in temp. Gauges also have not changed since I started 4th can. See pic. I know these readings are bad. What do you think is wrong? I've charged many systems before and never had this issue.
No guarantees but a bad hydraulic fan clutch fooled me one time. Lack of airflow across the condenser when parked and idling couldn't bring the temp down enough to get the charge in and be effective. Replaced the clutch and it sounded like an aircraft when I cranked it up and only then did I realize I had been missing the roar when temps got up.

Yep, had this happen to me, a friend who was an HVAC man put electric fans on his vans condenser to blow through it when the ac is on, my Dodge Dakota always quit blowing cold when sitting, I spent a fortune on it replacing stuff, wish I knew about adding an electric fan.
I’d love to add an electric pusher but there’s nowhere to put it. Have to replace the clutch puller which makes me nervous. I’ve been looking at F-150 electric clutch pullers. Doesn’t seem like the fan controller works with the E-series ECM though. I don’t know how far I can trust aftermarket controllers. I don’t like things that can stop functioning without my knowing.
My 99 E350 is fluid tension, I replaced it years ago when the radiator needed replaced, the clutch was just spinning, likely need do it again as it was over 10 years ago.
Just curious, are these gauge readings bad? I've had to evac and restore freon on a couple of my cars and I thought those readings were fine. I know 250lbs on the high side might be a little high but that depends on the temp.
Put a big fan in front of the vehicle to simulate road speed when dealing with AC problems
If you run your AC in hot traffic at idle speed it will not perform well
An additional electric fan will help
So will water spray on the radiator concenser
Research shocking the condenser
