302 balancers

i'm fairly new to ford V8's

What exactly determines if a 302 uses a 28oz balancer or a 50oz balancer?

I'm going to be putting a 302 in place of a 300 6cyl and have no parts right now. Trying to find out all i can before spending $$$.

around pre 1982 all 302/351 motors used a 28oz balance. After 82 the 351 continued to use the 28 oz but the 302 went to a 50 oz. So if your 302 motor came out in 81-83 you might wanna make sure you check/find out the balance. otherwise you should be able to make a fair assumption if the year isn't so close to the switch over period. typically, all pre-1982 302's use the 28.2 oz. (internal balance) balancers. From 1982 until it ceased production, all 5.0L/302's use 50 oz. (external balance) balancers. All 351W's use the 28.2 oz.

You also should ocnsider which transmission you are going to use. For instance, It will be impossible to find a C4 flexplate with a 50 oz. balance weight from the junkyard, but aftermarket companies make them for as little as $65.

Many users on this site have performed the exact swap you plan on doing, so you'll find plenty of first-hand knowledge to draw upon. Good luck and make sure to post pics when you're done! TK

by the way, if you're in doubt of which one you have, go to a NAPA parts store, and have them pull out a flexplate for an early 302 and a late 302. The difference in the size of the balance weight welded to it will be rather obvious, so you'll have seen both and will able to tell them apart in a junkyard.

Does it matter what position the balance weight is in? I'm switching from manual to auto and just picked up a used flexplate.

It will only go on one way. It'll look real close to the bolts going in but they wont. Just put it up there and keep spinning it until they all line up.
Is that what you're talking about?
