Just picked up a f350 for 450$. Crew cab. Long bed. 4x4. 460. Front was rotted out so swapped the whole clip. Swapped radiator. Wiring was hacked so pulled Harness from another 85 with a 351. Wire for wire. Now no power. Doesn't do anything. How many wires should I have hooked up for power? And by does noting I mean no buzzer, lights. Nothing.
I am also running a 3g 1wire alternator. So that wiring is gone.
If everything is dead, I'd suggest picking a fairly simple circuit and concentrate on that for now. The headlights might be a good starting point. With any luck, you'd find a problem common to other dead circuits, too.
Take a close look at the multiple small wires on one of the big posts of the starter relay. Ford used this post as a junction block for the power feed to nearly all circuits. The small wires go on the post connected directly by the short fat cable from the battery (+) terminal. If the small wires are on the other side of the starter relay (should be a single long cable to the starter), nothing will work.
Those small wires are actually fusible links. They are short sections of smaller diameter wire, designed to blow similar to a fuse. Look for evidence of bubbled insulation. Gently bend each fusible link back and forth to make sure the wire inside is still intact.
Issue found. New fusible links weren't hooked up right lol.
New issue. My steering column is toast. Only one I could get was from a 88 gasser with auto. So same as mine just different year. Obviously the cruise won't work but can I use the column and swap my steering wheel to it?

Might work. I would compare the ignition switch also. If the newer one won't plug in, see if you can swap it over or buy a new one to match the 85 but bolt to the 88 column.
Now that all the basic parts inside are working i want to do another upgrade:
I'd the dash vents. I have a parts truck to pull from. What is needed besides the dash trim and the dash itself? Is the box itself different?
Your truck doesn't have dash vents? And you want to add them from another truck? If so, that is a very difficult job, the complete HVAC system is different with added holes in the firewall.

DaveF didnt Ford have 3 different dashes for our trucks?
1- Non AC no vents
2- Factory AC with vents
3- think something call High Flow vents.
I think it has vents but no AC
OR
Am i making this all up
I know I and others can tell you the dashes, firewalls and boxes are different between the factory AC and Non AC trucks.
I dont know about the 3rd setup as I have never seen anything posted about it other than Bill the parts guy saying something about it.

Don't know about #3, but there is a fourth version you may encounter. Some dealer AC kits (non-factory) added vents to the face of a plain dash. These have a flanged bezel to conceal the cut edges of the holes and stick out a little bit. IIRC, they used the same factory louver insert as with factory AC.

I have like 4 dash pieces with vents lol. So I'll check the rigs and see. Ik at one point ìn the past I past I did the same job. I don't remember what on though. But I'll look and see if we have a non ac truck with vents.
