IAC Price

What prices have you guys seen for an IAC?

AZ would have to order it and I think it was around $40.

Our 97 wouldn't start without pushing the accelerator again this week, second time that's happened. Thinking there may be a bad spot on the IAC actuator. Weird though, only does it when it's raining.

Let me know on the prices,
Tom

A buddy had another idea - maybe it's the TPS. That might make more sense... seems it could be impacted by damp weather more.

The theory is that it's not registering that there's no throttle.

Thoughts?

I can tell you that the IAC fails usually when it's damp out - hell, the day mine finally bit the dust, it was raining and I had to get to class

If you have more than 50,000 miles on your rig, you might as well change it because it seems that it's a part designed for failure. The new one actually looks different - I think Ford realized the design was crap and improved it.

For $40, I'd go ahead and do it.

Not all orginals.... I still hae the original in my '97. It's seen a lot of rain, creek beds, fog, snow and 12 degree temps. It's never been anything but totally reliable.

That's funny too, TSD - have you noticed how either it fails in the first 50,000 miles or so or it never gives you any trouble?

Go figure.

And charging $140 in labor to remove 2 bolts is criminal, IMO.

If you can get $140 for two bolts, run with it. Not a bad deal if you can get it.

Are you serious?

Charging $140 for this job is like charging $200 for a tire rotation. Same amount of effort and difficulty.

I hate dealerships...

The closest thing I could find on fordpartsonline.com was a "IDLE SPEED CONTROL". Probably it huh?

Their prices are $57 for the 5.4 and $99 for the 4.6. Thought that was interesting...

The famous IAC.....................
Mine finally bit the dust a month or so ago. I stopped by the dealership to seek advice from a "service advisor" I did not ask for a free diagnosis but just what was the most popular part replaced when the trucks won't start. He told me that I really needed to get the truck in and soon, because it could be any number of things. He said it may be one or more of the four oxygen sensors, EGR valve or maybe the TPS. He advised that they replace these things all the time usually around $180 bucks.

Most of the time the truck would do it on initial start up (cold), but by the time the engine would get a little heat into, it would act normal. It eventually got bad enough that I was able to get it to my shop and remove the valve while it was malfuntioning. I found the shaft inside of the IAC covered with carbon and stuck closed. Took some carb cleaner ($2.00) and a pick (free), cleaned shaft. Problem solved (priceless). The old gasket usually doesn't tear.

When the IAC on my '98 4x4 Expy went out, I took it off and sprayed it with brake parts cleaner and worked it around, ran a pipe cleaner around inside, let it dry for a half hour, put it back on, no problems ever since, about a year ago.
