My truck was idling at about 1200 rpms so I cleaned the throttle body and IAC. That made it better for a few minutes but then it got worse... moving up to the 1500-1600 range.
I replaced the IAC - no change.
So I pulled the connector off the IAC - no change.
That makes me think it's the TPS telling the EEC that the throttle is
partially on. That would increase fuel but how is the engine getting the required air... IAC? Why would the IAC open if the TPS is telling the EEC we're not at idle?
Another possibility is a bad intake gasket... anyone know if any of my
symptoms disqualify that?
Tom, I recently had a high idle problem with my '88 Bronco 5.8L. Engine would start at about 1300 rpm and gradually climb as high as 2200. Cleaned the IAC chamber and throttle body, did not help problem. Someone on this board recommended replacing the TPS. Took his advice ... cost was $23.99 at Auto Zone. Installing the new TPS corrected my high idle problem immediately. John
Tom,
If you cleaned the throttle body still on the engine, that will screw up the intake gasket. The fact that the idle was normal or lower when you first started it and then it went higher would make the odds lean toward the intake gasket.
