ABS reset?
The backstory- front left tire was loose- I just had it in the shop for a couple recalls that I don't think would have taken the tires off- windshield wipers and underbody rivets- and a couple days later the front left tire starts wobbling. I immediately pulled into a lot and tightened all the wheels- the others were a bit looser than I would have liked as well. When I first started driving again, when I applied the brakes, it seemed like something wasn't quite sitting right and there was some noise and it felt like the front left brakes was maybe shifting around a bit, floating on the calipers or something like that. By the time I got home, it seemed everything had settled back into it's correct physical position and braking was perfectly smooth.
In all that, however, it tossed all the ABS & stability related controls, so I figure the wheel must have been loose just long enough to cause errors with the wheel speed sensor. There's no obvious physical damage so I'd like to give a field reset a shot and see if I can save $100. Any ideas?
(It's been 4600 miles since the last oil change, and I've used the same dealership and never had any issues with tightening the wheels, nor been told to come back after 50 miles for a retorque)
Thank you!
Turns out the 'tone ring' got damaged when the tires were loose. The differential speed sensor error caused a number of computer errors, so the dealership had to do a firmware update to the truck (at a cost of $500) before they could even really start figuring out what was wrong. After that, they replaced the speed sensor, and it still didn't work, so they took it apart and found the tone ring was damaged.
All said and done it was an $1800 job, but with some courtesy discounts and ford pass rewards I paid a few hundred less than that.
Everything works perfectly now.
Check your lugnuts, folks (though I wonder if someone was trying to steal my wheels at a mall, and got spooked when I hit the remote start.)
