I have a 1962 F250 4x4 with the Y block and factory 4 speed. I also have a left leg prosthesis and am getting to where I don't want a manual trans anymore. What am i looking at if I want to swap a C4 onto the back of the 292 knowing I will have to get an adapter kit to do it. What issues may I run into putting it into the truck? It has the divorced style Dana T-case which I hope will simplify some of it.
I cant really help but I believe a C4 would be to light duty for your truck so I would be looking at a C6.
But you may want to look into a AOD transmission (Auto OverDrive) from a later truck if you have to buy adapter.
This way with over drive it will lower the motor RPM and ware on it too.
Just my .02 if you have to go with an adapter.

I want to keep the Y block because it's in really good shape. Plus I've never seen an adapter for a C6 to a Y block. I can't believe you can't build a C4 to handle a Y block plus this truck is my toy not HD work truck. and one last thing is , the C4 is a fairly short tranny which helps.
True the C4 can be built up as I ran one in a 66 Bronco (lighter truck than yours) with a highly built up 302 that was used for off road racing.
I was just thinking if you were swapping trans to go with something that would last with out being built up.
Same for the adapter if they make one for a C6 then look for one for OD trans.
A short tail shaft C6 may fit your truck?
What auto was put behind 292 / 312 motors in cars?
I am sure someone has done what you are after.
Good luck

I looked into swapping a modern trans behind the y block in my 4x4 but all of them ended up being too close to the transfer case. The one option that fit fairly close to the original was running a turbo 700 behind the y block with a tail shaft shortening kit, with this the transmission is only 27” long. It’s a bit pricey to do all this though as the adapters seemed to have skyrocketed since Wilcap sold out. Best of luck to you.
I talked to the owner of Flat-O and he can set me up with a beefed up rebuilt C4 with the bellhousing adapter and rear bolt on yoke at just about 27-28" long. my intermediate driveshaft is about 16" long so I have room to shorten it to make it fit, I think. This way I can use the factory mounts for both engine and tranny.
