I have a 2001 Excursion XLT 4WD with V-10. I am looking at replacing the OEM shocks, and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with these shocks. Any help will be much appreciated.
Well, I know a guy by the user name of 3992824 has 'em and really likes them. 4-Wheeler, or was it peterson's off-road??, also did a shock test using the mighty V10 X as the test monkey. The Edlebrocks were rated quite highly.
I, for one, am swayed towards them. I "hear" that the RS9000 Ranchos can create a rather stiff ride. In the test Deutche Tech also did well. They are cheaper than both but seem to be more prevelant in the lowered truck market rather than the stock and lifted market. Plus I can't really find them anywhere. Although, that isn't saying much...
I believe that pretty much any specific name brand shock is better than the stock ones. Can't wait for warmth!! Then I get to tinker!
let us know what you choose and how they turn out!
Thanks for your input. Can you nail down that magazine article for me, who published it and when? I would really like to read it, even though I am almost certain that those are the shocks I will order. Thanks for your time and effort.

Jakebrake,
The article is called 'Massive Shock Shootout'. It compares Edelbrock IAS, Skyjacker, Superlift, Black diamond, Trailmaster, Doetsch Tech, ProComp and Rancho. One of the test vehicles used is an Excursion and the Edelbrocks were reviewed on the Excursion.
The magazine is Petersen's 4Wheel & Off-Road. The January 2002 issue.They have a website [link:www.4wheeloffroad.com|4Wheel&Offroad]
Great, thanks for the help. I need to find a copy of that article to read...and thanks for the link to the website. I'll let you guys know how things turn out.
I agree with Monsta, although I went with the Edelbrocks, any major brand will be an improvement. The shocks are my vote for the single best/most important upgrade. I got the Edelbrocks from CarParts.com over a year ago with a coupon for $57 a piece, shipping inc.. Haven't seen them near that price anywhere lately. If I was looking today, I might consider the Monroe Reflex. I believe they use a similar valve that the Edelbrocks do.
When I took the stock units off, one of them slid in and out freely with very little pressure. No wonder the Exc. porpoises and wallows with these stock units!:-X23
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 26-Feb-02 AT 01:52 AM (EST)]I went looking to see if I could find that issue of the magazine to read, no such luck. I think tomorrow I will just go ahead and order them. I picked up the wife's parents at the airport tonight, they returned from Europe, and they ride back on the freeway(in the wind)could have been better. These shocks, the originals, seem to have gone south on me lately. Yeah, I have convinced myself to order them. Best price I have found so far is $69.36 plus shipping. Let you guys know how it turns out after I get them installed. Thanks for all the input.
If you still want to read the article, go back to the 4wheel&offroad link I gave. At the home page click truck tech. Then select tech articles. At that page just click on the picture of the excursion 'It Says SHOCK SHOOTOUT'. This is the article from the mag you were looking for! It is available online for free!
I tried the link, and the article on the page is just a teaser, it doesn't give you the full article. Or am I doing something wrong? Anyway, I am still looking to read the article so I will keep looking for it. Thanks for your help.
Yeah! I see they printed the whole article except for the results.
If you want to email me your email address I will attach the results page for the shocks tested on the excursion.
My address is mrrottndog(No Email Addresses In Posts!)
Hey thanks, I just pulled the page off my e-mail. I will look this over tonight and make up my mind about what I am going to do. Looks like the Rancho RSX and the Doetsch Tech 3000 did well in the test also. I will spend some time looking into those shocks as possible options. Maybe someone has some feedback on those shocks. Again, thanks for your efforts.
I asked mrrottndog to send me the results off-list which he very kindly did. The Doetsch shocks seemed to outperform the rest but I have never heard of them. Their web site is not very informative either. I emailed them for info with no response yet. Anybody know anything about them?
The advertising info so far would give the nod to Edelbrock. I was about to order a set when I read the comparision. Now I am no sure.
Opinions?
I too read the test when I got my issue and was quite surprised by the Doetche Techs, I did some similar searching but as of yet haven't turned up much. They seem (the company) to be more oriented toward the lowered truck group. But given how they faired in the test as well as the price point makes me want to give them some serious consideration.
I'll do some more looking and keep you informed if I find anything out, if you'll do the same!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Mar-02 AT 07:14 PM (EST)]I have found a site that has the Rancho RSX shocks for $200 including shipping, from what I can find out they are similar to Monroe Reflex shocks (both companies are owned by Tenneco Auotmotive). I have had Monroe shocks before, they have a lifetime guarantee, only thing is I get tired of replacing them every year or so...thats about how often I had to change them on my F-250 4wd supercab. Since they build Rancho, I am a little afraid of them. The Doetsch Tech 3000 shocks are about $35 plus shipping from Fly-N-Hi in Arizona. Would like to know more about Doetsch Tech, I would like to know that they are going to be around, like Rancho and Edelbrock should be, to back up their product a year or so down the road. Best price on the Edelbrock shocks that I have found so far is about $280 plus shipping. They are expensive, but I am still leaning toward them. Just wanted to let you know what I know.
