Maintenance Question

2009, 74k miles, 5.4L V8, XLT, Super Duty, AT, PS, PB, 4X4 8 ft bed, supercab.
Another person on here helped me, so I finished replacing the rear Diff. Fluid, that went smoothly. All my other maintenance went fine, I was thinking about doing the serpentine belt, although its a bit early. All this is 'cause I'm planning a long trip in October to Montana, will do some 4x4 for sure.

I'm wondering you'all opinion on the serpentine belt replacement, yeah or nay ? On my generic maint. schedule it says grease the suspension fittings. The only ones I found are the drive shaft where it goes onto the front hub, 1 Zerk fitting on each side. I can't find any others ? I seem to remember a debate on where/when they started eliminating Zerk fittings and just went with all sealed bearings every where. Am I missing some ? As you can see from the mileage, the truck sits mostly...I only use if for RV type trips with a Cabover Camper. Sometimes towing a 1200 lb trailer. It does everything I want, just has pretty awful gas mileage. I had the plugs swapped at the dealership, because you'all warned me it was tricky. Their appearance seemed to indicate very clean combustion, all 8 cyl.

For piece of mind you can carry a new serpentine belt with you.

I did think of that...My understanding is the main tool you need is a long handle 1/2" square, to release the tension. And then you just thread the belt according to the diagram, good to go ? So if you have the spare belt, and the tool, not a tough on the trail fix...

That's correct, it's pretty simple and quick to do as long as you don't have to unwrap the old belt off any pulleys.

Generally speaking, I used to put the new belt on and put the old belt under the back seat, in a box with every idler/tensioner pulley and the tools to replace them. Never had to make an emergency repair like that, but it was comforting to know I had the parts and tools.

Nowadays I don't - I don't usually travel to the boonies anymore, so I'm usually close enough I can get help fairly quick.

My 07 5.4L had 144k miles on the factory serpentine belt when I traded it in. Still looked and worked great.

I'd just carry a spare.
