The other day I started up the compute and I got the screen that cheerfully wants me to 'finish setting up my computer' . You can never say 'leave me the F alone' -- the best you can do is put them off. I don't know if I hit the wrong button or what, but it went into a series of options with no apparent escapes -- finally asked for payment and I managed to blow it away.
My $35 (really ) HP printer keeps offering to 'update my printer' --but the fine print says it will then block any non HP cartridges. I usually get their stuff, but really. (Their new printers come with this feature)
And I read about some poor guy who opted for the HP auto order system. Somehow he ended up with too much ink. But the printer still thinks that he needs more and has LOCKED UP until he orders more (hope he can get out of that.).
Plus it's about time for me to get a new compute. However, when looking at reviews, I find that some are being shipped with W11S (security)
W11 S rules:
1. ONLY THE EDGE BROWSER
2. ALL SOFTWARE COMES THROUGH THE MICROSOFT STORE
- there might be more, but that's bad enough. You are supposed to be able to disable those 'features', but users are reporting that it's not always easy.
One that didn't seem to make it is on YouTube . They were supposed to be implementing a policy that if you had cleared your history, they wouldn't offer you personalized suggestions. Not much of a deal and I guess that they decided that nobody cared.
I had had a really nice HP printer for years. Print, copy, fax, form feed, etc. It was an expensive printer that fit my needs.
It worked fine right up to the day I put some aftermarket ink cartridges in it. One of the little know facts about these printers is that there's a reason ink is so expensive. There's a significant amount of logic and control built into each of those cartridges.
I don't know what or how, but the printer choked on those aftermarket cartridges. Putting original HP cartridges back in didn't cure it, either.
the very first thing i do when i get a computer is turn off ALL updates and upgrades.
i also block all cookies except for certain websites that i visit every day.
and on email, if i do not know the sender, it goes directly to spam.

My current printer is an HP DeskJet 842C bought way back in 2000 or so! It's had its share of new HP and aftermarket cartridges fed in and still works pretty much flawlessly. Of course I've not gone through more than two full reams of paper so it gets very little use.

Nothing is totally "idiot proof" because as a rule they're far more creative than we give them credit.
