Picked up that turbo kit today and according to the diagram posted it’s mostly there. Going to look around for a gasket kit, but I’m curious to see if there’s anything else I should buy new for this kit. Below is a picture of the kit, the only thing I didn’t include was a bucket of bolts. I’m also having a hard time finding the waste gate on this unit and the diagram, but I may just be a dunce.
That is not the 093 ATS kit, and it will not match the files I uploaded.
That would be either 088 or 085 ATS kit, still a good kit. Someone may have uploaded the files for it in the past, but I don't have them saved, sorry.
For reference the wastegate is on the hot side of the turbo, and would have a linkage that goes to a small air diaphragm to control it. I believe the 093 was the first ATS turbo with a wastegate, the earlier kits didn't have one.
I noticed the diagram looked different from the kit, which made me think it wasn’t fully a 093 kit. However the ID plate on the turbo itself says 093. I am at least 70% confident this kit will work on my 88, I just need to get the right fittings and hoses. I also need to source a waste gate since this one doesn’t have it. I also need to find heat shields, a tube from CDR to valve cover, then an overall gasket/oring kit.
you do not need a waste gate with that unit. it will work fine on your 88.
it is basically the same as the non wastegate banks kit i have on my 88 for the past 490,000 miles.
I understand that I don’t need the waste gate to make this work, but a lot of my driving is in town and uphill, so being able to make that boost at lower rpm is what I’m looking for to improve my mpg overall. I know these trucks aren’t ever going to be the fastest or be able to tow the most weight, but if I can I want to spend the least amount on fuel
ok let me rephrase than. that turbo is not made to accept a wastegate.
rpm does not make boost. load does.
i can take a hill empty at 45 mph and will only make 2-3 psi boost climbing it.
same hill, same speed, but with 15,000 lbs behind me and i make 15 psi boost.
