Hey guys, looking for knowledge and opinions of the group here. I'm looking at an 11 and a 16, both lariats.
2011 job 2 best I can tell. 188k no navigation, dealer maintained.
2016 290k, checks all the boxes.
Older truck less miles, or newer truck more miles? Hit me with your concerns.
Yea, I'm torn. I'd prefer a 15-16, but extra miles for those years gives me pause.
I did a search in New Mexico for you and there's not much there in your price range...
Check out this thread as there's a few users here over 200k miles...
Definitely agree with you on the 15/16 gen but you should look in other neighboring states to see if there's a truck out there with less miles for the same price maybe.
I would pass on both. In my opinion a 300k mile truck is worn out maybe not the engine but the rest of it is and it will be a money pit.
Like mentioned before the 11-14's had turbo and valve issues. Also not mentioned before, EGR coolers on the 11-14's had a tendency to clog up ($2000+) repair bill. 15 and up they rerouted the cooling system to fix this issue. I also believe the earlier models had issues with leaking radiators as well.
Keep looking until you find a 15 or newer with 200k or less miles.
When I was looking I always seemed to end up seeing the better deals in Utah. The prices in Colo & N M were always quite a bit higher, I don't know what it's like now but that was my experience
Oh yea, I'm very aware of the prices here in NM. I haven't bought anything expensive in this state pretty much ever. I always travel to AZ or TX. Utah and CO I worry about rust a little bit. I know its not as prevalent as the rust belt, but its still far worse than the southern neighboring states. Thanks for the insight on the issues. I was aware of turbos and valve seats, but not the coolers or radiators.
Alright another question for the northern guys. How bad is the rust if undercoating was applied? Do they still rot the rockers and cab corners eventually? Would you just stay away from a northern truck all together if you had the choice?
How many of you guys that are tuned but haven't horse whipped it have had trans problems?
I D K for sure but my truck was a Canada truck w/o under coating & it looks good underneath. As far as the trans I did the weight loss 100k ago with a 40hp tow tune & everything is still going good, but then again I'm an old fart & ain't out beating the cramp out of it.
I've got a 2011 with 130K and no visible body rust. I do make a point of running it through a car wash with undercarriage spray after every snow/salt event.
Tuned and horse whipped for 57K miles and no tranny problems.
