My granddaughter accidentally pulled the rearview mirror off my '79. There is a remaining mark from the location but I'm not sure if it's the original factory spot. My search didn't quite answer the question....Should the mirror be centered side to side? The glue mark now is not, it's off the the passenger side about one inch.
A bunch of years ago, after it fell a couple of times, I fixed it but good. I measured and cut a piece of about 1/16" steel about 2" wide, maybe 3" long, drilled the mounting button, glued and screwed it to the metal, painted it black, then mounted that to the cab metal above the windshield with two sheet metal screws, then mounted the mirror. It's a little higher, but I can see the whole tailgate inside if needed ... and I had a thermometer hanging there this day. The mirror is higher up so I see more out the windshield, but it's still low enough I can see the vehicles behind me ... and it'll never fall on a hot day now ... nor will it ever pull a chunk of glass out with it.
Factory ... I always thought was too low, but it was centered.
I will say for anyone wanting to mount the button and dont know where it goes do this.
With mirror in hand hold it up to the glass and then move both sun visors to make sure they clear.
Now mark the glass around the mirror then on the out side do the same as you will be removing the inside mark when cleaning the glass.
Follow the directions of the button glue and mount the button to where the mark is on the outside.
Clean the mark on the outside and if done right the visors should clear the mirror when mounted.
I found a grease pen worked for marking as it wipes off.
